Meaning · English
Time brought forth the creatures. Time, in the beginning, brought forth Prajapati. Self-born Kashyapa came from Time, and from Time ardour was born.
Every creature that is born, Time put into the world. Before them stood Prajapati, the lord of creatures, and he too came from Time. Kashyapa, an ancient seer called self-born because no parent is given for him, is traced to Time as well. Last comes ardour, the inner heat of discipline by which, in the Vedic telling, worlds are shaped. Self-born and from Time sit side by side on purpose: even what has no maker is placed downstream of Time.
Open a family album to its oldest page. The great-grandfather everyone calls the start of the family is there as an infant, held in arms the photograph cuts off. Prajapati and self-born Kashyapa are the founders other stories begin with. Here they are that infant, and Time is the hands holding them.
