Meaning · English
The sisters share one endless road; taught by the gods, they walk it by turns. Lovely, unlike in colour, one in mind, Night and Dawn neither clash nor stand still.
Night and Dawn are called sisters. They travel the same path across the sky, and that path has no end. Each goes in her turn, as she has been taught; Sāyaṇa takes the teacher to be the Sun. One is dark, the other bright, yet they are of one mind. So they never harm each other, and neither ever stops. Sāyaṇa reads the word for 'lovely' as 'fruitful', since all things are born of them; later readers take it as 'well-formed'.
Picture a hospital ward with one night nurse and one day nurse. They walk the same corridor, past the same bedsides, but are never both on shift at once, and the ward is never left untended. Night and Dawn work the sky like that: one road, taken in turns, with no gap and no quarrel.
