Meaning · English
Shining leader of joyful voices, she has been seen; bright-hued, she has opened our doors. Setting the world moving, she has shown us our wealth. Dawn has woken every creature.
Dawn leads the joyful voices because, as Sāyaṇa notes, birds and animals begin calling as soon as she appears. The first sounds of the day follow her. The doors are our own doorways, hidden by darkness until her light lets us see them again. As the world starts to move, she shows us what is ours, which had been out of sight all night. The last line says she has woken every being. Sāyaṇa reads it more vividly: Dawn draws the worlds back out of darkness as if they were newly made.
When a stage's lights come up, nothing new has been carried on. The chairs, the table and the actors were there in the dark. Yet the scene seems to begin at that moment, and the actors start to move. Dawn works this way: the world was there all night, and her light makes it appear and set to work.
