Those Who Saw Before
Rig Veda 1.113.11

Meaning · English
The mortals who saw the earlier Dawn shining out have gone. Now she has become one for us to see. Those who will see her later are already coming.
Kutsa sets three groups of mortals, people who die, side by side. The first watched the dawn of long ago and are now gone. The second is his own, alive this morning, and she is now theirs to look at. The third has not arrived yet but is already on the way, and will see her after the nights still to come. The people change, and the dawn they see does not. Sāyaṇa sums it up: she runs through past, present and future alike.
Picture a stone step at a river ghat, worn smooth in the middle. Grandparents sat on it to watch the sun come up. This morning a young man sits there. Children not yet born will sit there too. The step outlasts every sitter. The dawn is that step, and each generation of watchers only takes its turn.
