The Life-Breath Returns
Rig Veda 1.113.16
Meaning · English
Rise up. Life's breath has returned to us; darkness has gone, light draws near. She has opened a path for the Sun to travel; we have reached where life is lengthened.
The call goes out to those still asleep: get up. Through the night the breath, the life that moves the body, seemed to be away. At dawn it is back, and with it comes all the ordinary work of the living. Dawn's task is to clear the way so the Sun can follow. The last line says the people have arrived where life is drawn out. Sāyaṇa reads that word as food, made plentiful by generous givers. Most later readers take it as length of life.
Think of a shop at opening time. The shutter rattles up, the lights come on, and the street outside starts to move. Nothing new was built overnight. What was shut is simply open again. Dawn does this for the world. She lifts the dark, the day's living picks up where it stopped, and the Sun comes through the gap she made.
