Vrikshasana — the tree

Gheranda Samhita 2.36

Meaning · English

Place the right foot at the root of the left thigh, and stand on the ground like a tree. This, the knowers say, is the tree posture.

The name comes in two parts: vriksha, a tree, and asana, a seat or posture. Asana is the word the hatha manuals use for any fixed way of holding the body. So the name says the whole idea: hold yourself the way a tree holds the ground. The verse then gives the form in one line. One foot, the right, is set at the root of the opposite thigh. The root of the thigh means the top, where the leg joins the body. The other leg stays straight and bears the weight. The text says to stand on the ground, and it adds the comparison itself: like a tree. A tree does not lean, fidget or walk about. It stands on one trunk and stays. This is all the verse says. It gives no breath, no hands, no gaze and no length of stay. It names no benefit either. Gheranda is telling his student Chanda the shape, and he trusts a teacher to fill in the rest. The ending, 'thus the knowers call it', means the name is the tradition's own and is handed down. Why teach it? In this part of the Gheranda Samhita the asanas are given as the first step of the body's discipline. The tree shows the simplest case of the aim: a body that stands still without effort showing. What it asks of a practitioner is a single quiet balance on one leg, held without gripping.

The text gives only the foot and the standing. The joined palms, the raised arms, the fixed gaze and the breathing below are modern teaching, added so the pose can be done safely on a mat. The text's own form puts the right foot at the root of the left thigh. The lesson shows the same pose, with the foot high on the inner thigh, and you may begin on either leg. Beginning on the left leg matches the text. 1. Stand tall with your feet together. Let your arms hang and breathe normally. Fix your eyes on one still point in front of you, at eye level. 2. Shift your weight onto one leg. Keep that knee soft, not locked. 3. Lift the other foot and place its sole high on the inner thigh of the standing leg, with the knee turned out to the side. Press the foot and thigh gently against each other. Join your palms at the chest and keep breathing evenly. 4. Breathe in, and raise the joined palms straight up overhead. 5. Stay here like a tree: rooted through the standing foot, growing up through the arms. Breathe slowly through the nose. A few slow breaths is a fair start. The text gives no count. 6. If you sway, keep the gaze steady and let the standing foot make small corrections. The foot may rest lower, on the shin. It never rests on the knee. 7. Breathe out. Lower the arms, and bring the raised foot down beside the other. 8. Now stand on the other leg and repeat from step 2 on the mirrored side. 9. Finish standing still, feet together, and feel the steadiness you have built. Fine points: the hip of the standing leg stays level, so do not let it push out sideways. The raised knee opens from the hip, not by twisting the standing knee. Let the shoulders drop away from the ears as the arms rise.

On the standing side, the foot, ankle, calf and thigh muscles make constant small adjustments. You feel them as a gentle trembling. The buttock muscle of that leg works to keep the pelvis level. The raised leg is opened outward at the hip, which lengthens the inner thigh. Raising the arms stretches the sides of the chest and the shoulders, and the spine lengthens upward. The breath is slow because a held or hurried breath makes the whole body rigid and the balance worse. Breathing in as the arms rise lets the ribs open. Slow breathing in the hold gives the muscles a steady rhythm to work against. For the mind, the single fixed point does most of the work. Balance depends on the eyes, the inner ear and the feel of the foot. Giving the eyes one still object leaves less for the attention to wander over, and it keeps the head steady. When the thought drifts, the body sways, so the pose shows you at once where your attention has gone. The tradition's own account is simpler still. The tree is steady and rooted, and the practitioner is meant to become so. That is the tradition's reading, not a body measurement.

The verse itself makes no promise. It gives the form and the name, and nothing is claimed for the pose in this line. Gheranda's wider purpose for the asanas, as he teaches them to Chanda, is a firm and steady body as the ground for what follows. Schools that teach the tree today say it gives steadiness, balance, a calmer attention and a sense of being grounded. These are the schools' claims, not the verse's. The picture of a tree, rooted below and rising above, is the text's own image, and it is the reason this pose is taught to beginners for steadiness.

A woman waits on a train platform, shifting her weight from foot to foot as the crowd presses in. Standing on one leg is something she does a dozen times a day without noticing, when she steps onto the train, pulls on a shoe or climbs a stair. That is the everyday use of this pose. What is well established is general. Balance is a skill that responds to practice. Standing on one leg works the foot, ankle and hip muscles, and it trains the link between eyes, inner ear and the feel of the ground. Keeping the eyes on a fixed point does help steadiness. Slow, even breathing generally settles the mind and the body. The text makes no health claim for the pose, so there is nothing to test or dispute. Notions of a settled mind or rooted state are the tradition's way of speaking, and have no physiological counterpart beyond the calm of attention. The raised arms and joined palms belong to modern postural yoga, taught widely from the twentieth century onward. They are not in the verse.

This page is not medical advice. A teacher can see what a page cannot, and a pose like this is best learnt with one. Stop if you feel pain, especially in the knee, hip or ankle. Take extra care with a knee injury, a hip problem, a recent surgery on the leg or foot, dizziness or low balance, or low or high blood pressure. Pregnancy also calls for a teacher's guidance, because balance shifts. Do not take the pose if you feel faint or unsteady. Never rest the foot on the side of the standing knee. It pushes the joint sideways. Never force the raised knee outward by hand. If the foot will not stay high on the thigh, lower it. Stand near a wall until the pose is secure.

Gentler: keep the toes of the raised foot on the floor with the heel against the ankle, or place the foot on the shin below the knee. Stand beside a wall and rest a fingertip on it, or hold a chair back. Keep the hands at the chest instead of overhead. Fuller: bring the foot higher, toward the root of the thigh, which is the text's own placement. Raise the arms, then close the eyes briefly only once the pose is steady. Always do both sides, and begin with the one that feels weaker if you wish.

Resting the foot on the knee strains the joint → lower it to the shin or lift it higher on the thigh. Locking the standing knee → soften it slightly. Hip pushing out to the side → draw the standing hip in and keep the pelvis level. Looking around or down → fix the gaze on one still point. Holding the breath → breathe slowly through the nose. Leaning the body over the standing leg → grow tall and let the ribs lift.
