Maitreya spoke to his teacher Parasara. "Venerable sir, you have told me everything I asked about the creation of the universe. But there is one part I want to hear again. Swayambhuva Manu had two sons, Priyavrata and Uttanapada. You told me the story of Dhruva, who came from Uttanapada. But you never told me about the children of Priyavrata. I would like to hear about his family." Parasara began. Priyavrata married Kanya, the daughter of Kardama. She bore him two daughters, Samrat and Kukshi, and ten sons. They were wise, brave, humble, and obedient to their father. Their names were Agnidhra, Agnivahu, Vapushmat, Dyutimat, Medha, Bhabya, Savala and Putra. The tenth was Jyotishman, who lived up to his name.

All of Priyavrata's sons were famous for their strength. But three of them, Medha, Agnivahu and Putra, turned to religious devotion. They remembered the deeds of their earlier births, and they did not want a kingdom. They practised austerities in the proper season, wanting nothing and expecting no reward. So Priyavrata divided the seven islands among the other seven sons. Agnidhra received Jamvudwipa. Medhathiti was given Plakshadwipa. Vapushmat became ruler of Salmali, and Jyotishmat was made king of Kusadwipa. Dutimat received Kraunchdwipa, Bhabya received Sakadwipa, and Savala received Pushkara. Agnidhra, king of Jamvudwipa, had nine sons, each as mighty as the patriarchs: Nabhi, Kimpurasha, Harwarsha, Ilavrita, Ramya, Hiranvat, Kuru, Bhadraswa, and Ketumala, who was always devoted to piety.

Now Parasara told how Agnidhra divided Jamvudwipa among his nine sons. Nabhi received the country called Hima, south of the snowy mountains. Kimpurusha was given Himakuta, and Harivarsha was given Nishada. Ilavrita received the land at whose centre stands Mount Meru. Ramya received the countries between that land and the Nila mountain, and Hiranvat received the country north of it. Kuru was given the land bounded by Sringavar. Bhadraswa received the countries east of Meru, and Ketumala received Gandhamadana in the west. Having set his sons up as kings, Agnidhra went to the holy place Salagrama and gave himself to penance. Parasara added that the eight countries other than Nabhi's are places of perfect enjoyment and spontaneous happiness. There is no change of fortune there, no fear of old age or death, and no division between virtue and vice, better and worse. The turning of the ages does not touch them.

Nabhi ruled the country called Hima. By his queen Meru he had a radiant son, Rishabha, and Rishabha had a hundred sons, the eldest being Bharata. Rishabha ruled justly and performed many sacrifices. Then he installed Bharata as lord of the earth and went to the hermitage of Pulastya, to practise penance as a hermit. He kept his austerities until his body was only skin and fibres. Then he put a pebble in his mouth and went naked onto the great road. Because his father handed the country to Bharata when he left for the woods, it was called Bharata from then on. Bharata had a pious son, Sumati. After ruling for some time, Bharata, who loved sacrifice, gave the kingdom to Sumati with all its royal splendour. He practised severe austerities and gave up his life at Salagrama. He was born again in a distinguished family of ascetics.

Parasara then named the line that followed. From Sumati came Indradyumna, whose son was Pratihara. Pratihara's son was Pratihartta, then Bhava, who fathered Udgitha. Udgitha's son was Prastara, whose son was Prithu. After Prithu came Nakta, then Gaya, then Nara, then Virat. Virat's son was the brave Dhimat, who fathered Maharta. Next came Manasyu, then Twashtri, then Viraja, then Raja. Raja's son was Satyjit, who had a hundred sons, the eldest being Viswagyotish. Under these princes, Bharatvarsha was divided into nine parts, and their descendants ruled the country in turn for seventy-one cycles. Parasara closed by saying that this was the line of Swayambhava Manu, by whom the earth was peopled, the lord of the first Manwantara in the Kalpa of Varaha.
