Maitreya came to Parasara with a request. You have told me about the children of Swayambhuva, he said. Now tell me about the earth itself. How many oceans are there, how many islands, how many kingdoms, mountains, forests and rivers? Where are the cities of the gods? What is the earth's size, its nature, its form? Parasara answered gently. Listen, Maitreya, and I will give you a short account. I could not give you a full one even in a hundred years. Then he began. The earth, he said, is made of seven islands: Jambu, Plaksha, Salmali, Kusa, Krauncha, Saku and Puskara.
Each island, Parasara went on, is circled by its own sea, and there are seven seas. The first is salt water. The others are sugar-cane juice, wine, clarified butter, curds, milk and fresh water. Jambudwipa lies in the middle of them all. In the middle of Jambudwipa stands the golden mountain Meru. It rises eighty-four thousand yojanas above the ground and sinks sixteen thousand into it. At the top it is thirty-two thousand yojanas across, and at the base sixteen thousand. It is like the seed-cup of a lotus, and the earth is the flower around it. South of Meru stand the mountains Himavat, Hemakuta and Nishadha. To the north stand Neela, Sweta and Sringhee.
Between these ranges lie the countries, which are called Varshas. South of Meru come Bharata, then Kimpurusha, then Harivarsha. North of it come Ramyaka, then Hiranmaya, then Uttarakuru. Each is nine thousand yojanas wide. Ilabrita, at the centre, is the same, reaching nine thousand yojanas from each side of Meru. Bhadraswa lies to the east of Meru and Ketumala to the west. Four mountains were set around Meru as buttresses, each ten thousand yojanas high: Mandara, Gandhamadana, Vipula and Suparswa. On each grows a great tree: a Kadamba, a Jambu, a Pipal and a Vata. Each stands eleven thousand yojanas tall, like a banner for its mountain.
The Jambu tree gives the island its name. Its fruits are as large as elephants, and when they fall on the mountain they burst. Their juice becomes the river Jambu. People who drink from it do not sweat, do not smell foul, and do not grow old or weak. The soil along its banks takes in the juice, is dried by the wind, and turns into gold called Jambunada. The Siddhas make their ornaments from it. Around Meru lie the forests Chaitrarath, Baibhraju and Nandana, and the mountain Gandhamadana. There are four lakes whose water the gods drink: Atunoda, Mahabhadra, Sitoda and Manasa. Many lesser ranges spread out from Meru like the filaments of a lotus.
On the summit of Meru lies a vast city named for Brahma, fourteen thousand yojanas across. Around it, in each direction, are the cities of Indra and the other guardian gods. The Ganges rises from the foot of Vishnu, flows past the moon, and falls from heaven into Brahma's city. There she splits into four rivers. Sita flows east to the ocean, through Bhadraswa. Alakakanda flows south into Bharata, divides into seven, and reaches the sea. Chakshu crosses the western mountains and Ketumala and reaches the sea. Bhadra crosses the northern mountains and Uttarakuru and reaches the northern ocean. Meru sits like the centre of a lotus. Bharata, Ketumala, Bhadraswa and Kuru lie outside the mountains like its petals. Eight great mountains, in pairs, bound Meru on its four sides.
The valleys among these mountains are lovely. Siddhas and Charanas visit them, and there are cities and forests with the palaces of Vishnu, Lakshmi, Agni, Surya and other gods. Gandharvas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, Daityas and Danavas play there day and night. These are called the paradise regions of the earth, the homes of the pious. The vicious, even after a hundred births, never reach them. Vishnu dwells in each country in a different form. In Bhadraswa he is horse-headed, in Ketumala the boar, in Bharata the tortoise, and in Kuru the fish. Hari, lord of all, lives everywhere in his universal form, and he supports all things. In Kimpurusha and the seven other countries there is no grief, weariness, worry or hunger. People are healthy and fearless, and live ten or twelve thousand years. Indra sends no rain, and they live on water from the earth. There the ages of Satya and Treta make no difference. Each country has seven great ranges, and hundreds of rivers rise from them.
