Best of speakers, tell me how I may truly grasp this. I find it very hard to bear, this wrong that the wicked do to a person. Even for the learned, O Soul of all, one's own nature is stronger. Only the peaceful are the exception, those who love your dharma and make your feet their home.

Uddhava has heard Krishna say that a person who wants what is good should raise himself, even when insulted, struck or spat on. Now he pushes back honestly. Three words carry his doubt. Prakriti is nature, from pra and kri, what is set forth first: the temperament a person is born with and has shaped by habit. Shanta means peaceful, from sham, to grow quiet. Dharma, from dhri, to hold, is the way of life that holds a person steady. Taken clause by clause: he asks Krishna to say how he can really understand this teaching. He admits that a wrong done by wicked people is almost unbearable to him. He adds that even the learned, who know all the right ideas, are overpowered by their nature. Then he names the one exception: the peaceful, who love Krishna's dharma and live at his feet, meaning they take refuge in him. He asks because he suspects that knowing the teaching and living it are two different things. Uddhava does not argue with Krishna here. He puts his own difficulty on the table, and his question is whether anything outside nature can hold a person up. The verse asks the listener to be as honest as Uddhava about the gap between knowing and doing.

A footpath is worn across a lawn, and a sign says keep off. Everyone who reads the sign still walks the groove, because feet follow the old line. Nature is that groove: it carries even the learned past what they know.

1. Tonight, recall one small insult from this week that still stings. Write one line on how you answered, and whether it matched what you believe. 2. Notice the first physical sign when you are slighted: heat in the face, a tight jaw. Say its name silently, once. 3. Sit for two minutes in whatever way you honour Krishna, or simply in quiet, and let that sting rest beside you without answering it.

A man stands at a cousin's wedding when an uncle jokes loudly about his small salary. Everyone laughs. He has read about patience and believes in it, yet his face is hot and his reply is already half formed. Uddhava's verse speaks to exactly this moment. First, it grants that knowing is not the same as being steady, which is why the man's belief did not arrive in time. Second, it names the heat as nature, the old groove, so he need not take it as proof that he is a fraud. Third, it points to the peaceful, whose steadiness the text says comes from loving Krishna's dharma and taking refuge at his feet, not from cleverness alone. So the man might breathe once, say nothing for a moment, and turn his mind toward Krishna before he turns toward the uncle. Ordinary experience confirms that a calm head in advance does little once the sting lands. The verse does not promise the sting will vanish, or that the uncle will stop, or that the hurt will not need a quiet word later with someone he trusts.
