Meaning · English
Cursed at and scorned by wicked people, cheated, resented, struck, shut away, stripped of his livelihood, spat on and fouled by the ignorant, shaken in many such ways: one who wants his true good, even fallen into hardship, should lift himself up by himself.
Three words carry it. Shreyas is the lasting good, set against what merely feels pleasant now, and shreyaskama is the one who wants it. Krichchhra is hardship, a tight place. Uddharet comes from ud, up, and hri, to carry: to lift out, as a cart is lifted from a ditch. Krishna lists the ways a person can be brought low. Abused and scorned by bad people. Shamed, cheated, resented. Struck, locked up, robbed of his living. Spat on and even fouled by fools. Shaken again and again in many ways. The list runs from words, to blows, to loss of bread, to the lowest disgrace, and leaves nothing out. Then comes one instruction, given to the person who wants his true good: lift yourself by yourself. The commentators read the two selves as the steady, discerning mind raising the mind that has sunk under the hurt. Why is it taught here? Just before, Krishna has told Uddhava that the mind is swept about by the three qualities, the way a watcher copies a dancer. Insult is where that sweeping is hardest to resist. Krishna does not tell Uddhava to wait for the offender to repent or for the world to turn fair. The work of rising is put in the hurt person's own hands. It asks the listener to treat his own recovery as his task, and to keep his true good in view while the blows are still landing.
A child falls in the playground, grazes a knee, and the other children laugh. Nobody comes to help. He puts his palms on the ground, pushes up, and brushes off the dust. The fall and the laughter were done to him; getting up is the part that is his own.
1. Next time someone's words sting, say one plain sentence to yourself: "I was insulted." Nothing more. 2. Breathe out slowly three times before you answer or act. 3. Ask yourself, "What is actually good for me here?" Do only that one thing, even if it is small. 4. Tonight, for two minutes, notice whether you are still replaying the scene. If you are, let the thought go and return to what is in front of you.
A young man stands at a railway ticket counter. The clerk mocks his accent and the queue behind him laughs. His face is hot, his heart is racing, and the sharp reply is already in his mouth. The verse works in that moment step by step. First it names the thing: he has been insulted. Then it points to the one part still his, which is what he does next. He lets one breath go out. He asks what he actually came for, a ticket to his mother's town, and what in this moment is good for him. He says it calmly, or steps aside and tries another counter. Afterwards he does not carry the clerk home and replay him through supper. Ordinary experience confirms that anger and a pounding heart narrow our thinking, and that an insult replayed lasts far longer than the insult itself. The verse does not promise that the sting vanishes, or that the clerk changes. Where blows, confinement or danger are real, it does not ask anyone to stay and endure. Getting safe and seeking help come first.
