The Ashvins, Physicians of the Gods

Rig Veda 1.116

The story · English

A singer gathers his praise for the Nasatyas the way a priest cuts sacred grass, and sends it out the way wind drives rain clouds ahead of it. He begins with the bride they brought to young Vimada, carried in a chariot that moved as fast as an army on the march. He remembers their donkey, which won a thousand in the race at Yama's contest. Then he comes to the great rescue. Tugra had abandoned his son Bhujyu in the waters, the way a dying man leaves his wealth behind. The Ashvins came for him in living ships that crossed the air and never touched the waves. For three nights and three days their winged craft carried him, in three chariots with a hundred feet and six horses, to the far shore of the sea.

Out on that ocean, where there is nothing to grasp and nowhere to stand, they did a hero's work. They brought Bhujyu home in a ship with a hundred oars. The singer moves on through their gifts. To Aghasva they once gave a white horse, a blessing meant to last. That gift still deserves its fame, and Pedu's horse still deserves to be called upon. For Kakshivan of the Pajra line, who praised them, they opened wisdom, and from the hoof of their strong stallion they poured out a hundred jars of sura. Atri had been thrown down into a pit of fire. They cooled the blaze with frost, gave him rich food, and lifted him out, unharmed, with all his people.

For the thirsty Gotama they lifted a well, turned its base to the sky and tipped its mouth downward, so the water ran out for him as freely as rain. Chyavana had grown old and been left alone. They stripped the aged skin from him as a man takes off a garment, lengthened his life, and made him the husband of young women. Vandana lay hidden in a pit, and they, knowing exactly where, brought him up like buried treasure. The singer announces another deed the way thunder announces rain. Dadhyac, son of Atharvan, spoke to them through a horse's head and told them the secret of the honey. And a wise woman, married to a man who could not father children, called on them at a great rite.

They heard her call as if it were a command, and gave her a son, Hiranyahasta. They freed a quail from the jaws of a wolf. They gave a grieving poet back his sight. At night, in Khela's battle, Vishpala lost a leg, cut away like a bird's wing. At once they fitted her with a leg of iron, so she could run when the fighting began again. Rjrasva killed a hundred rams and gave them to a she-wolf, and his father blinded him for it. The two physicians gave him new eyes. The daughter of the Sun climbed into their chariot as if she had won it in a race, and all the gods agreed in their hearts. Their chariot came to Divodasa and Bharadvaja loaded with wealth, drawn by a bull and a porpoise yoked together.

They came with strength to the people of Jahnu, who set out their share three times a day. At night they carried Jahusha away by easy paths when enemies surrounded him on every side, and their chariot split the mountains. One morning they made Vasa strong for battle, to win thousands, and with Indra beside them they drove off the enemies of Prithushravas. They raised water from a deep well so that Sara, son of Richatka, could drink. For the worn-out Sayu they made a barren cow give milk. To Visvaka, son of Vishnu, they restored his son Vishnapu, as a lost animal is found again. Rebha had lain bound and wounded in the waters for ten nights and nine days. They lifted him out the way a priest lifts soma with a ladle. The singer closes: he has told their deeds, and asks for cattle, sons, long life, and clear sight until he reaches old age as a man reaches his own home.
