How Ayurveda Came Down

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 1.3

The story · English

Bharadvaja, a sage of fierce austerity, wanted a long life, and he knew where to look for it. He went to Indra, lord of the immortals, in whom others take refuge. The knowledge of life, Ayurveda, had come down a line. Brahma spoke it. Prajapati received it whole. From Prajapati it passed to the two Ashvins, and from the Ashvins Shakra alone received it. That is why the sages sent Bharadvaja to Shakra. This is how the sending came about. Diseases had arisen among embodied beings. They stood in the way of austerity, fasting, study, celibacy, vows, and life itself. Moved by compassion for all creatures, the great sages of good deeds gathered on a fair slope of Himavat: Angiras, Jamadagni, Vasishtha, Kashyapa, Bhrigu, Atreya, Gautama, Pulastya, Narada and Asita.

Agastya came, and Vamadeva, Markandeya, Vishvamitra, Chyavana, Badarayana, Shaunaka and Maitreya, the Vaikhanasas and the Valakhilyas, and many other great sages. They were storehouses of the knowledge of Brahman, of restraint and discipline, and they shone with the heat of their austerity like fires fed with offerings. Seated at their ease, they talked. 'Health is the root of dharma, of wealth, of pleasure and of liberation,' they said. 'Diseases rob us of it, and of every good, and of life. A great obstacle has risen up before humankind. How can these diseases be calmed?' Then they sat in meditation, and with the eye of meditation they saw their refuge, Shakra. 'The lord of the immortals will tell us rightly how to calm them. But who will go to the palace of the thousand-eyed one and ask the husband of Shachi?'

'Let me be given this task,' said Bharadvaja. He was the first to speak, so the sages sent him. Bharadvaja went to Shakra's palace. There, among hosts of gods and divine sages, sat the slayer of Bala, shining like a blazing fire. Bharadvaja approached, greeted the lord of the gods with blessings of victory, and humbly gave him the sages' message. 'Diseases have arisen that frighten every living being. Lord of the immortals, tell me rightly how they may be calmed.' Shakra, the god of a hundred sacrifices, saw how wide the sage's understanding was, and taught him Ayurveda in only a few words. It was the knowledge of cause, sign and remedy, a refuge for the healthy and the sick alike, three-threaded, everlasting and pure, the same knowledge Brahma, the Grandsire, had first understood.

That knowledge had no end and no far shore, and it stood on three great branches. Bharadvaja, his whole mind fixed on it, took in all of it, rightly and quickly. Through it he gained a life beyond measure, and a happy one. He passed it on to the sages exactly as he had received it, adding nothing and leaving nothing out. The sages, wanting long life, took from him this knowledge that lengthens life and serves all people. With the eye of knowledge they saw clearly the general and the particular, qualities, substances, action, and inherence. Knowing these, and keeping to the rules the teaching laid down, they found the highest peace and a life that did not soon run out. Then Punarvasu Atreya, his heart given to friendship, out of compassion for all beings gave this pure Ayurveda to six disciples.

They were Agnivesha, Bhela, Jatukarna, Parasara, Harita and Ksharapani. The teacher taught them all alike; only their minds differed, and so Agnivesha was the first to compose a treatise. After him Bhela and the others composed their own, and recited them before Atreya and the assembled sages. The sages listened, and, delighted, agreed: 'It has been set down as it should be.' Together they praised the six, and all at once they called out aloud, 'Well done. This is compassion for living beings.' The divine sages in the sky heard it, and with the gods they rejoiced. A cry of 'Ah, well done,' warm and deep, rose from glad beings and carried through the three worlds. A gentle wind blew, light opened every direction, and heavenly flowers fell with rain. Then understanding, success, memory, intelligence, steadiness, fame and patience entered Agnivesha and the others, and their treatises, approved by the great sages, took their firm place on earth for the good of all beings.
