The Marriage of Arjuna and Subhadra
Mahabharata, Adi Parva 222
The story · English
When the heroes of the Vrishni race spoke against Arjuna for taking Subhadra by force, Vasudeva spoke with deep morality. He told them that Arjuna had not insulted the family but had enhanced its respect. He argued that the Satwata race is not mercenary and that Arjuna knew a self-choice marriage was doubtful. He questioned who would approve of accepting a bride as a gift like an animal or who would sell their own children. In his view, Arjuna saw these faults and took the maiden by force according to the ordinance. He believed the alliance was proper because both Subhadra and Arjuna possessed great renown. He said he saw no one in all the worlds, except Mahadeva, who could vanquish Arjuna in battle by force.
Vasudeva advised the Vrishnis to follow Arjuna cheerfully and use conciliation to bring him back. He warned that if Arjuna returned to his city only after defeating them by force, their fame would be lost, whereas there was no disgrace in peaceful reconciliation. Following these directions, the family stopped Arjuna and he returned to Dwaraka, where he was united in marriage with Subhadra. Arjuna spent a year in Dwaraka, sporting as he pleased and being worshipped by the sons of the Vrishni race. He spent the final year of his exile in the sacred region of Pushkara. After twelve years were complete, he finally returned to Khandavaprastha, where he first approached the king and then worshipped the Brahmanas.
Upon his return, Arjuna went to Draupadi, who spoke to him with jealousy. She asked why he lingered there and told him to go to the daughter of the Satwata race, remarking that a second tie always relaxes the first one upon a faggot. Draupadi lamented much in this way, but Arjuna repeatedly pacified her and asked for her forgiveness. He then went to Subhadra, who was dressed in red silk. He asked her to enter the inner apartments dressed not as a queen, but in the simple clothes of a cowherd woman. Despite the simple dress, Subhadra looked even handsomer. She first worshipped Kunti, who smelt her head with deep affection and pronounced infinite blessings upon the girl.
Subhadra then approached Draupadi and worshipped her, saying that she was her maid. Draupadi rose, embraced Madhava's sister with affection and prayed that her husband be without a foe, a wish that Subhadra accepted with a delighted heart. From that time, the Pandavas and Kunti lived in happiness. When Krishna heard that Arjuna had reached Indraprastha, he travelled there with a large army and many leaders of the Vrishni and Andhaka tribes, including Rama, Akrura, Anadhrishti, and Uddhava. They brought many nuptial presents. King Yudhishthira sent the twins to receive them. The Vrishni host entered Khandavaprastha, where the streets were swept, watered, and decorated with floral wreaths and fragrant sandalwood water.
The city was filled with the scent of burning aloes and with joyous, healthy people, and was adorned with merchants and traders. Krishna and his companions were worshipped by thousands of citizens and Brahmanas before entering the palace. Yudhishthira received Rama with ceremony and embraced Krishna, who in turn worshipped the king and Bhima. Yudhishthira welcomed the other Vrishni and Andhaka leaders according to their rank. Krishna then gave much wealth to the bridegroom's party, gave Subhadra the nuptial presents her relatives had given her, and gave the Pandavas a thousand gold cars with bells and four steeds each, along with ten thousand milk-yielding cows from Mathura and a thousand white mares with gold harnesses.
Krishna also gave them a thousand white mules with black manes and a thousand young virgin damsels skilled in personal service, each wearing a hundred pieces of gold around her neck. He provided hundreds of thousands of draft horses from the Valhikas as Subhadra's dower, and ten carrier-loads of gold as her personal property. Rama gave Arjuna a thousand massive elephants, each as large as a mountain summit and equipped with golden ornaments and thrones. This immense wave of wealth filled the Pandu ocean to the brim. Yudhishthira accepted the presents and worshipped the warriors. The Kurus and Vrishnis spent many days in pleasure and merriment, shouting and clapping with joy.
Eventually, the Vrishni heroes returned to Dwaravati with Rama in the lead, carrying gems given to them by the Kurus. Vasudeva remained in Indraprastha with Arjuna, and the two spent time on the banks of the Yamuna hunting deer and wild boars. In time, Subhadra gave birth to a son named Abhimanyu. He was born with long arms, a broad chest, and eyes as large as a bull's. He was called Abhimanyu because he was fearless and wrathful. To celebrate the birth, Yudhishthira gave ten thousand cows and gold coins to Brahmanas. From his earliest years, Abhimanyu was the favourite of Krishna, his father, and his uncles, growing up like the moon of a bright fortnight.
Abhimanyu became conversant with the Vedas and learned the science of celestial and human weapons from Arjuna. He acquired great strength, lightness of hand, and the ability to counteract weapons hurled at him. He mirrored his father in his knowledge of scriptures and religion, filling Arjuna with joy. Abhimanyu bore every auspicious mark, was invisible in battle, and possessed a voice as deep as a drum. He was equal to Krishna in bravery, energy, and beauty. Meanwhile, Draupadi also bore five sons, one for each husband: Prativindhya by Yudhishthira, Sutasoma by Bhima, Srutakarman by Arjuna, Satanika by Nakula, and Srutasena by Sahadeva. These five became renowned warriors, immovable in battle like hills.
The sons of Draupadi were born at one-year intervals and were deeply attached to one another. Their childhood rites, including the first shave and the sacred thread, were performed by Dhaumya. After studying the Vedas, they all learned weaponary from Arjuna. With these sons, the Pandavas were filled with joy. Having already settled in Indraprastha at the command of Dhritarashtra and Bhishma, the Pandavas began to bring other kings under their sway. Yudhishthira ruled justly, balancing virtue, pleasure, and profit. He was a protector of all good people and a devoted student of the Vedas. His influence spread virtue across the earth, and his subjects loved him sincerely for his truthful and agreeable nature.
One summer, Arjuna suggested to Krishna that they spend time on the banks of the Yamuna. With Yudhishthira's permission, they set out with a large party to a spot with tall trees and luxury mansions. The group spent their time in pleasure; women danced, sang, and drank wine, while Draupadi and Subhadra gave away their robes and ornaments to others. Amidst the music of flutes and guitars, Arjuna and Krishna sat on costly seats and discussed past achievements of prowess. While they sat there like the Aswins in heaven, a Brahmana approached them. He was tall as a Sala tree, with a golden complexion and matted locks, blazing with a splendour that resembled the morning sun.
