Bearer of the gods' unstoppable strength against battle-mad foes, you made wise Shiva your messenger and ended the demons' scheming envoys. Victory to you, slayer of Mahisha, lovely-haired mountain's daughter.

Three things are packed in. She carries the combined strength of the gods, a force nobody can hold back, and turns it on enemies made reckless by love of fighting. Shiva, praised as the sharpest in counsel and lord of his band of attendants, is the one she sends as her messenger: the great god runs her errand. The demons send envoys too, full of crooked plans and bad intent, and her mind is set on ending them. Then the refrain: victory to Mahisha's slayer, with lovely braided hair.

Picture a family quarrel where the grandmother doesn't send a child with her note. She sends the eldest uncle, the one everyone listens to. Who carries a message tells you how much weight sits behind it. When Shiva himself, the wisest counsel among the gods, walks over as her go-between, the demons learn exactly whose word they are hearing.

युद्ध के लिए उन्मत्त शत्रुओं के विरुद्ध देवताओं का अदम्य बल धारण करने वाली, तुमने ज्ञानी शिव को अपना दूत बनाया और दैत्यों के कुटिल दूतों का अंत किया। तुम्हारी जय हो, महिष का वध करने वाली, सुंदर जटाओं वाली पर्वत की बेटी।

इसमें तीन बातें समाई हैं। वे देवताओं का संयुक्त बल धारण करती हैं, ऐसी शक्ति जिसे कोई रोक नहीं सकता, और उसे उन शत्रुओं पर चलाती हैं जो युद्ध के मोह में उतावले हो गए हैं। शिव, जिनकी स्तुति परामर्श में सबसे प्रखर और अपने गणों के स्वामी के रूप में होती है, वही उनके दूत बनकर जाते हैं: महादेव स्वयं उनका काम करने निकलते हैं। दैत्य भी दूत भेजते हैं, जो टेढ़ी योजनाओं और दुर्भावना से भरे हैं, और देवी का मन उनका अंत करने पर दृढ़ है। फिर टेक आती है: सुंदर गुँथी जटाओं वाली, महिष का वध करने वाली की जय हो।

एक पारिवारिक झगड़े की कल्पना करो जिसमें दादी अपनी चिट्ठी किसी बच्चे के हाथ नहीं भेजतीं। वे सबसे बड़े ताऊ को भेजती हैं, जिनकी बात सब सुनते हैं। संदेश कौन ले जाता है, इससे पता चलता है कि उसके पीछे कितना भार है। जब देवताओं में सबसे बुद्धिमान परामर्शदाता स्वयं शिव उनके बिचौलिये बनकर चले आते हैं, तो दैत्य ठीक-ठीक समझ जाते हैं कि वे किसकी बात सुन रहे हैं।
