Meaning · English
Your hand shelters even enemy wives and warriors who surrender; your hand holds the spotless trident over the defiant. Heaven's drums boom. Victory to you, Mahisha's slayer, mountain's daughter.
She is pictured by her hands, and each does a different job. One hand gives fearlessness, and it gives it to the enemy's own people: the wives of her foes and their finest fighters, once they come to her for shelter. Asking for refuge is enough to change which side of her they stand on. The other hand holds a trident, called spotless, set against the one who opposed the trident-bearer who heads the three worlds. Around all this, the gods' drums beat so loudly that the blazing sun itself seems to ring.
Picture a crossing guard at a busy road. One arm is held straight out, palm flat, and the traffic stops. The other arm is curved, waving a frightened child across to the safe side. The hand of refuge is that waving arm, open to anyone who comes. The trident hand is the flat palm that holds danger back.
