And this settled teaching, handed down through a line of disciples, has been set down in brief, in arya verses, by noble-minded Ishvarakrishna, who first understood it rightly.

The question behind the verse is simple. Why should a reader trust a short book of verses on so large a subject? The author answers with three claims. First, the teaching is not his invention. It came by shishya-parampara, a succession of pupils, each learning from the one before. Second, he understood it fully before writing. The phrase is samyag vijnaya, knowing it rightly and completely. Third, what he wrote is samkshipta, condensed. It is a digest, not a new system. The siddhanta is the settled conclusion of the school, its agreed position after debate. The arya is a metre counted by syllable weight (morae), which suits memorising. The word arya also means noble, and the author is called arya-mati, noble-minded, a small play on words. The reasoning is quiet but clear. A summary is only as good as its maker's grasp of the whole, so he grounds his book's authority in understanding and in a lineage of human teachers.

Picture a folded pocket map of a large city. The streets are drawn tiny, the parks are green patches, and whole neighbourhoods fit on one fold. Yet nothing important is missing, because the mapmaker walked the city first. The walking is the full understanding, the fold-out sheet is the short set of verses, and the city is the larger teaching they shrink without distorting.

Two parts of this claim sit well with what is known today. Cognitive psychology broadly agrees that rhythm and fixed metre help people memorise and recall long material, which is why oral traditions across the world use verse. And the philosophy of testimony, from Hume's caution to Thomas Reid's defence of trusting informants, treats chains of teachers as a real, if fallible, source of knowledge. The harder part is checking faithfulness. Historians note that the older, fuller Samkhya works this book claims to summarise are largely lost. So whether the summary is exact, or quietly shaped by its author, cannot be settled from outside evidence. Scholars still debate how much of classical Samkhya is Ishvarakrishna's own arrangement. The claim of fidelity stands as the author's testimony, plausible but not independently confirmed.
