The sage, out of compassion, gave this purifying, foremost teaching to Asuri. Asuri in turn gave it to Panchashikha, and by him the system was worked out in many ways.

Any reader of a philosophy book can fairly ask where it came from and why it should be trusted. Ishvarakrishna answers with a line of teachers. The sage, whom the tradition names as Kapila, gave the teaching to his student Asuri. Asuri passed it to Panchashikha. Panchashikha then elaborated the system in many ways. The word for system is tantra, meaning an organised body of doctrine. Two words describe the teaching itself. Pavitra means purifying. The classical commentators read this to mean that the knowledge cleans away the suffering the work set out to end. Agrya means foremost, first among such means. The motive is anukampa, compassion: the sage taught because people suffer. What follows matters for this school. Its authority rests on a human sage and a chain of students, not on a creator God. Samkhya counts reliable testimony as a means of knowing, and the lineage is offered as testimony of that kind.

A baker gives a jar of sourdough starter to a neighbour. The neighbour keeps it alive and hands some to a friend. The friend feeds it and bakes rye loaves, flatbreads and rolls from it. Each jar is the same living culture, passed hand to hand. In the same way, one teaching went from sage to student to student. The last of them widened it into many forms.

Most of what anyone knows comes from testimony: teachers, books, experts. Modern epistemology treats testimony as a real source of knowledge. Since Hume, it has also asked when testimony deserves trust. One common answer is reliability: a source is trustworthy if the chain behind it tends to deliver truth. Samkhya, which counts reliable testimony among its three means of knowing, makes a similar move. Historians are more careful with the chain itself. Kapila is known only through tradition. Panchashikha survives mainly in fragments quoted by later writers. In many ancient traditions, lineage lists mark authority as much as they record events. So the verse is good evidence of how the school saw itself. It is weak evidence of who taught whom. Whether the doctrine is true is a separate question, settled by its arguments rather than its pedigree.
