This knowledge, hidden and not easily seen, has been fully set out by the supreme sage for the sake of the purusha's aim. In it, the staying, arising and dissolving of beings are examined.
The poem has just finished describing freedom. Now it steps back and asks what kind of teaching this has been. Its answer has three parts. First, purpose: it serves the aim of purusha. Purusha is the witness, pure consciousness, and Gaudapada reads its aim as moksha, release from the round of suffering. Second, character and source: the knowledge is guhya, hidden, meaning it is not obvious and not picked up casually. It was laid out in full by the supreme sage, whom Gaudapada names as Kapila. Third, content: it examines how things stay, how they arise and how they dissolve. Gaudapada takes 'beings' to mean everything that unfolds from prakriti, nature, all that changes. Why study that? Gaudapada explains that weighing these three phases produces clear discernment of the twenty-five principles, and Samkhya holds that this discernment is what frees. No creator appears in this account. For Samkhya, nature itself unfolds and withdraws.
A small child sits terrified at a puppet show. Then someone takes her backstage. She sees how each puppet is lifted out of its box, held up on strings for its scene, and laid back down afterward. The next show still plays, but it no longer grips her. Seeing how nature's forms arise, stay and dissolve works this way, Samkhya holds, for the watcher.
Modern physics and biology also study how things arise, last and break down, from stars to cells. Conservation in physics, where matter and energy change form rather than vanish, offers a loose comparison with Samkhya's picture of things dissolving back into their source. It is a comparison only, not a match. Psychology partly agrees with the claim that understanding loosens a grip: noticing how a thought or a craving arises and passes is used in modern therapy to reduce distress. The larger claim is harder. Samkhya is a dualism. It holds that consciousness is wholly separate from matter. Physicalism disagrees. Neuroscience maps how experience tracks brain activity, but why there is experience at all, the hard problem, remains open. Freedom from rebirth through knowledge has no evidence either way.
