Meaning · English
When the body breaks apart and nature, her purpose fulfilled, withdraws, the self attains aloneness that is both: certain, admitting no exception, and final, admitting no return.
The question is what happens, at death, to someone who has already understood. Verse 67 left such a person alive, the body running on old momentum. Samkhya's answer is that when the body breaks apart, prakriti withdraws for good. Prakriti is nature, everything that changes. In Samkhya her whole task was to give purusha, pure witnessing consciousness, experience and then the knowledge that tells the two apart. With that task done, nothing calls her back. What purusha reaches is kaivalya, aloneness: consciousness standing by itself, no longer bound up with body, mind or feeling. Two words describe it. Aikantika means certain, without exception. Atyantika means final, never to be covered over again. Gaudapada explains why this death has no sequel. The stored traces left by good and bad deeds have run out, so nothing remains to set up another birth. Freedom while alive was real but still housed in a body. This freedom is both sure and permanent. Classical Samkhya brings no God into this. Release follows from nature's work being finished.
Picture scaffolding around a finished building. While the work went on, it was everywhere, and the two looked like one structure. Once the work is done, it comes down completely, and nobody puts it back. The building was never resting on it. Nature is the scaffolding, there only for the work. Consciousness is what stands once it is gone, for certain and for good.
This is a claim about what consciousness is, and today's nearest discussion is the philosophy of mind. Samkhya is a dualism. Consciousness is not made of matter, and it can stand apart from it. Mainstream neuroscience does not share that view. It finds experience closely tied to brain activity, and it has no evidence of awareness continuing after the brain stops. Most researchers lean toward physicalism, the view that mind depends on the body. Still, the hard problem of consciousness is unsolved. No one can yet explain why brain processes come with felt experience at all, and this keeps dualist positions in serious discussion. Freedom after death cannot be tested, so science neither confirms nor refutes it. Samkhya's distinction between the witness and the contents of experience still shows up in modern talk of awareness and its objects.
