Once right knowledge is reached, and merit and the rest no longer act as causes, the knower remains, still bearing a body, carried by the force of past impressions, as a potter's wheel keeps spinning.
The question is a fair one. Suppose knowing purusha (pure consciousness, the witness) as separate from prakriti (nature, all that changes) sets a person free. Why doesn't the body vanish the moment that knowledge arrives? Samkhya's answer is that knowledge removes the causes of future births. It does not halt the motion already under way. 'Merit and the rest' names the seven binding dispositions: merit, demerit, ignorance, lack of dispassion (attachment), dispassion, power and powerlessness. Gaudapada reads knowledge as burning them, the way roasted seeds can no longer sprout. They remain, but they can start nothing new. What keeps the body going is samskara, the momentum of past action. Gaudapada adds that merit and demerit already ripening cannot be cancelled, because they are already in play. They run out in their own time. Knowledge burns only what has not yet begun, along with whatever the knower does from here on. So the freed person goes on living. When the leftover momentum is spent, the body falls and release is complete.
Switch off a ceiling fan. The current stops at once, yet the blades keep circling for a while, slowing, and then come to rest on their own. Nothing drives them any more. They are using up the spin they already had. The switch is the knowing: no new current flows. The slowing blades are the living body, finishing out a momentum that was set going before.
The closest modern parallel is psychological. Insight rarely undoes learned patterns at once. A person can see clearly why they react as they do and still find old habits firing for months. Therapists and learning researchers widely accept that conditioned responses fade gradually, through use and disuse, not through understanding alone. On that point Samkhya's picture fits well. Physical inertia offers a loose comparison only: a body in motion keeps moving until something slows it. The larger claims stand outside what science can test. Whether past action leaves a store that drives future births, and whether that store can be burnt so no birth follows, has no accepted scientific evidence supporting it; it remains a metaphysical claim. Samkhya's dualism, consciousness apart from matter, remains one position in the open debate between dualists and physicalists.
