One, like a spectator at a play, looks on indifferently: 'I have seen her.' The other stops: 'I have been seen.' Though the two are still joined, there is no longer any purpose for creation. (The words 'I have seen her' follow the common variant reading 'dṛṣṭā mayā'; the text printed here has only the other's thought, 'I have been seen.')

The question behind the verse: if purusha and prakriti are still together after liberation, why doesn't experience start up again? Purusha is the witness, pure consciousness. Prakriti is nature, everything that changes, woven from the three gunas, its basic strands. Samkhya holds that once insight has dawned, the witness looks on like someone in the audience: 'I have seen her.' Nature, for her part, stops: 'I have been seen.' The two are still in contact, yet nothing new unfolds for this purusha. Gaudapada explains why. Both are all-pervading, so their contact cannot simply end. But contact alone never drove creation. Purpose did. Nature had two tasks: to give the witness experience of sound and the other objects of the senses, and to show it that it is distinct from the gunas. Both are finished. Gaudapada adds that prakriti is one, not many. So freedom is not a move to somewhere else. It is a task completed. Notice that no creator God enters the account. Nature's own purpose drove everything.

Two neighbours share a fence. One borrowed the other's ladder and has now carried it back. They still live side by side, still see each other over the fence every morning, but nothing passes between them anymore. The closeness is unchanged. The reason for exchange is gone. Purusha and prakriti stay in contact in the same way, with nothing left to trade.

Samkhya is a dualism. Consciousness and matter are two different kinds of thing. Most philosophers of mind today lean toward physicalism, the view that mind arises from the brain. Yet the hard problem of consciousness, why physical processes are accompanied by experience at all, remains open, so a strict split between witness and world is still argued seriously. The weaker point is purpose. Samkhya says matter acts in order to serve consciousness and stops once that service is done. Physics describes matter through laws, not goals, and offers no support for nature having aims. Psychology does offer a loose echo. Seeing a pattern in oneself clearly can loosen its grip, though it rarely ends it at once. Whether knowing alone can stop anything is still open.
