Nature Stops, Witness Watches

Samkhya Karika 65

Meaning · English

Thereby purusha, settled like an onlooker and at ease, sees prakriti. She has stopped bringing forth and, her purpose done, has turned back from her seven forms.

What does freedom look like once it comes? Samkhya answers with two figures. Purusha is pure consciousness, the witness that never acts. Prakriti is nature: everything that changes, including body, mind and feeling. Freedom, on this account, is not purusha escaping anywhere. It is prakriti ceasing to produce. 'Thereby' points back to the knowledge just described: clear, complete, free of error. Gaudapada reads the stopping this way. Prakriti had been producing intellect, ego-sense and their effects for purusha's sake, to give it experience and then release. Once both aims are met for that purusha, nothing is left to produce. So it turns back from the seven forms through which it had bound itself. Samkhya's list is merit, demerit, ignorance, detachment, non-detachment (attachment), power and powerlessness. Knowledge, the eighth, is what frees. Purusha simply sees this, settled like an onlooker. Gaudapada glosses 'at ease' as standing in itself, in its own place. No god halts the process. Nature stops because its purpose is spent.

Picture someone sitting on a bench at a laundromat. The drum slows, the last spin winds down, and the machine clicks off. The person on the bench pressed nothing. The cycle ended because the wash was done. The person watching is purusha, and the machine is prakriti. The finished wash is the purpose that, once met, leaves nothing more to run.

The picture is plainly dualist: a consciousness that only watches, and a nature that does all the work. Most philosophers of mind today lean toward physicalism, the view that mind is what the brain does. Neuroscience has mapped a great deal about how attention, thought and feeling arise in the brain. What it has not done is explain why any of that is felt from the inside. This is the hard problem of consciousness, so a 'witness' cannot simply be ruled out. Meditators across traditions report a state of quiet awareness with little mental content, and such states are studied. Samkhya parts from current science on one point: it holds that nature acts for a purpose and halts when that purpose is met. Physics describes processes without goals, and it has nothing that matches nature stopping for one person.
