So, from repeated study of the principles, a knowledge arises: 'I am not; nothing is mine; there is no I.' It leaves nothing over, is pure because free of error, and stands alone.

What finally ends suffering, according to Samkhya? Not a ritual, and not a god's favour, but a kind of knowing. The claim is that steady practice of sorting the principles (tattvas) of the world produces three insights. 'I am not': I am not this body and mind. 'Nothing is mine': none of it belongs to me. 'There is no I': for Samkhya, the sense of being a doer is itself made by nature. Samkhya holds that purusha, pure awareness, only witnesses. Prakriti, nature, does all the changing, thinking and acting. Gaudapada reads the practice as going over the twenty-five principles: this is nature, this is the witness, these are the senses and the elements. The body is not mine, he explains, because I am other than it. 'Leaving nothing over' he takes as free of ahamkara, the I-maker. 'Pure' means without error, which he glosses as doubt. 'Alone' means this and nothing else. For Samkhya, such knowledge is what frees.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room. Each time you notice a sound, an itch or a thought, silently label it 'noticed' and let it go. 2. Today, when irritation or worry rises, pause for one breath and name it as a passing state: 'worry is here', not 'I am worried'. 3. Before sleep, write down three things you call 'mine': your mood, your plans, your tiredness. Beside each, note one way it changed during the day.

Philosophy of mind still argues over dualism, the view that consciousness and matter are two kinds of thing, and physicalism, the view that everything is physical. Samkhya's dualism is unusual: thought, memory and the sense of self all sit on the matter side. Only bare awareness stands apart. Cognitive science also treats thinking and the felt self as processes the brain carries out. That part lines up loosely. Hume's account of the self as a bundle of perceptions makes a related point about the missing owner. Psychology finds that noting thoughts as passing events, as mindfulness practice does, often loosens their grip. Science offers no evidence for a separate witness that never changes, and none against one. Why there is experience at all, the hard problem of consciousness, remains open.
