Meaning · English
By setting up an image, one becomes ruler of the whole earth. By building a dwelling for it, one becomes lord of the three worlds. By worship and the services that follow, one reaches the world of Brahma. By all three together, one comes to be like me. But by devotion that looks for nothing in return, one finds me alone. One who worships me in this way gains devotion itself.
Krishna is closing his list of what temple service earns. He gives it in steps. Installing an image, pratishtha, brings sovereignty over the earth. Building the shrine brings lordship over the three worlds. Daily worship and its offerings bring the world of Brahma. Doing all three brings likeness to Krishna himself. Then the line turns. Nairapekshya means looking to nothing else, with no glance sideways at the payment. Bhakti yoga is devotion, from bhaj, to share in, used as a path. Krishna says that worship done without watching for return reaches him alone. The last clause adds that whoever worships him this way receives bhakti yoga as the gain itself. So the rewards come first and the turn comes after them. The listener is shown the full price list and then told that the best fruit is not on it. Uddhava has just heard how to install, build and endow, and the question behind it is why anyone should do this. Krishna answers with two reasons. There are real fruits for the work. The truest fruit is the love that the work was meant to grow. The commentators generally read the earlier rewards as lesser fruits and the last line as the point of the whole passage. What Krishna asks is that the worship be done for himself and not for what it brings.
A man digs a well at a village crossing. Travelers drink, rest in the shade of the tree beside it, and some thank him. He dug it because people were thirsty. The shade and the thanks are the listed rewards. The digging for its own sake is the devotion that asks nothing back.
1. Tonight, light one lamp or place one flower before a picture or a window, whichever you have. 2. Before you do it, name the person or the God it is for, in one sentence, silently. 3. Ask for nothing during that minute, not health, not luck, not an exam result. Stand quietly for one minute. 4. Afterward, notice whether the wish to ask came up, and let it pass without acting on it.
A retired schoolteacher carries a bag of rice to the neighbourhood shrine, where a committee is collecting for a new roof. At the gate she catches herself counting. How much is this worth, and will anyone notice her name on the list? She stops, sets the bag down, and asks whom it is for. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First it admits that the counting is natural, since the text itself lists rewards. Then it separates the gift from the ledger, so the rice is given to Krishna and not to her own standing. Then it points to what she keeps, which is a habit of giving that grows each time it is done without a bill attached. Ordinary experience agrees that a gift given for applause feels thinner afterward than one given quietly. The teaching does not promise that the roof will be finished, that the committee will be fair, or that her worries at home will lighten. It does not replace the practical care that her own household needs.
