Having set up an image of me, a person should build a strong temple for it, and lovely flower gardens, and provide for the processions, the pilgrim outings and the festivals. To keep the worship and the other rites flowing on the great festival days and every day, a person should give fields, shops, towns and villages. By giving them, such a person reaches closeness to me, a share in my own standing.

Three words carry the verse. Pratishtha is installing an image so that worship has a fixed place. Pravaha means flow, as of water in a channel. Sarshti means sharing the same rank, standing beside the Lord as a companion. Krishna first says to build a temple that will last, and to plant flower gardens, so the image has a home and the flowers for its offerings grow nearby. Then he names the gatherings around the image: processions, pilgrim outings and festivals. The second half gives the reason for the gifts. Worship should keep flowing on the great festival days and on every ordinary day, so the one who worships gives fields, shops, towns and villages. Their income pays for the lamps, flowers and priests long after the giver is gone. The commentators read this as endowment: a gift that keeps the daily service alive. At the end, Krishna says the giver reaches sarshti, closeness to him. Why teach this here? Uddhava has been told how to worship one image in one house. Krishna now widens the question to what happens when worship is meant to outlast the worshipper. His answer is to make provision for it. What it asks of the listener is generosity that is steady and built to last, not a single splendid gesture.

A family kitchen stays warm because someone put grain in the store and wood in the shed long before supper. The stove is lit every evening without anyone having to find a meal that day. The endowment is that store: it keeps the daily offering lit when no one has time to think of it.

1. Choose one small thing that will keep your worship going, such as a lamp, a flower or a few quiet minutes, and fix its time, for example just after you wake. 2. Set out tonight what tomorrow needs: the lamp wiped, a spare wick, the flower's place. Notice how much easier the morning feels. 3. This week, give one small, steady thing to a shared place of worship or to someone who tends it, such as a few flowers, a little oil or an hour of sweeping.

Dinesh, a retired schoolteacher in a small town, stands under the temple's leaking roof during the monsoon. The festival committee is asking for money again. He has given before, in a burst, and the repairs never lasted. He wonders whether giving once more is worth it. The verse changes the question in steps. Krishna does not ask for a grand gift. He asks for provision that keeps worship going on festival days and on ordinary ones. So Dinesh asks what would keep the roof mended, the lamp filled and the garden watered year after year. He offers a small monthly sum, or his own time on the first of each month, in place of one large donation. He asks the committee to keep the accounts open to the village. Ordinary experience bears out that what is given at regular intervals tends to last longer than what is given in a rush. The verse does not promise that the roof will hold, that a committee will be honest, or that giving settles any worry in the giver's own house. Where money is short, a family's needs come first.
