Everything Is Brahman

Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.1

Meaning · English

All this is Brahman: source, end and breath of everything. Meditate on it calmly. A person is made of resolve, and becomes after death what they resolved here. Let them resolve, then.

Brahman is the one reality behind everything. The claim covers the whole world, not just a part of it. Brahman is what the world comes out of, what it melts back into, and what it breathes by while it lasts. The text asks for calm, steady attention to that. Then it turns to the person. A human being is made of resolve, the settled aim that steers a life. Whatever that aim is in this world, the person becomes after death. So the aim is worth forming with care.

Picture ice cubes in a glass of water. They froze out of water, they float in water, and as they melt they become water again. At no point are they anything else. The world stands to Brahman the same way. Things take shape out of it, live inside it, and dissolve back into it, never made of anything else.
