Made of Mind and Light
Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.2
Meaning · English
Made of mind, its body breath, its form light, its intent true, its self open space; holding every act, wish, scent and taste, it embraces all this, silent, needing nothing.
This describes Brahman, the reality a person is asked to meditate on, one quality at a time. It is made of mind, so it is aware. Its body is breath, the life that moves through every living thing. Its form is light. Whatever it intends comes true, with no gap between wanting and being. Its self is open space, present everywhere at once. Every action, wish, smell and taste in the world belongs to it. Though it holds all of this, it says nothing and lacks nothing.
Picture a cinema screen. Battles, meals, a garden in bloom all appear on it, made of nothing but light. The screen holds every scene and is part of each one, yet it never speaks a line or prefers one story. That is the shape given to Brahman: all things play out within it, and it stays still.
