Tiny Yet Vaster Than Worlds

Meaning · English
My self within the heart is smaller than rice, barley, mustard seed, millet, a millet's kernel, and larger than earth, the middle air, the heavens, all these worlds.
Shandilya speaks of his own self, the one he finds within his heart. He measures it twice. First he goes down through small things, each tinier than the last: rice, barley, mustard seed, millet, and finally the husked kernel of a millet grain. The self is smaller still. Then he goes up through large things: the ground, the air above it, the sky beyond, and all the worlds together. The self is larger than those too. He does not choose one size. He gives both.
The pupil of an eye is a black dot no wider than a lentil. Yet through that dot fits a whole valley, the clouds over it, and a sky full of stars. The opening is tiny, but what it takes in is not. The self in the heart is like that: small where it sits, larger than everything around it.
