Meaning · English

That subtlest essence is the self of everything here. It is what is real. It is the Self. You are that, Shvetaketu. 'Teach me more, sir.' 'I will, my son.'

Uddalaka points to something too fine to see and says every thing in the world is, at bottom, made of it. That is what 'real' means here. It is not the shapes things take but what they are underneath. He calls the same thing the Self, the inner being of a person. Then he turns it on his son: you are that. Shvetaketu is not separate from the essence he is learning about. He is it. The son does not argue. He asks to hear more, and his father agrees.

A ring, a chain and a bangle sit in a jeweller's tray. They have different shapes and different names. Melt any one of them and you get the same gold. The shapes are the many things of the world. The gold is the fine essence inside each one. Shvetaketu is told he is the gold, not only one bangle.
