Meaning · English

Aware of the outer world and all-pervading, the Self is Vishva. Aware of the inner world, it is Taijasa. Dense with knowing, undivided, it is Prajna. Yet it is one alone, remembered in these three ways.

Four words carry the verse. Prajna comes from pra and jna, to know: awareness. Vibhu means all-pervading, from vi and bhu, to spread out. Ghana means thick or compact, like a solid lump. Smrta means remembered, handed down by the tradition. Gaudapada names three. Vishva is the one whose awareness faces outward and spreads over the world: the person awake. Taijasa is the one whose awareness faces inward: the person dreaming. Prajna is the one whose knowing has gone dense and undivided, with nothing separate to look at: the person in deep sleep. Then comes the turn of the verse. These are one, not three. The Self is remembered in three ways, as one man is a walker, a dreamer and a sleeper. Why begin here? The Mandukya Upanishad speaks of the Self in these states, and Gaudapada opens his commentary in verse by fixing the names and the claim together. The question underneath is: who am I, if I am so different from hour to hour? Shankara reads the words 'one alone' as the point of the verse: the states change, the knower does not. The verse asks the listener to hold a question open: who was present in all three?

A woman walks through the market buying vegetables, then sits in her kitchen turning over the day in her mind, then lies in the dark room asleep. The market, the thoughts and the sleep are different, and she is the same woman throughout. The three states are the three places, and the Self is her.

1. Tonight, just before sleep, spend two minutes recalling the day outward: faces, sounds, places. Then say to yourself, 'I was there.' 2. Tomorrow, on waking, before getting up, try to recall any dream, even a scrap. Note that someone was present in it who said 'I'. 3. Later in the morning, say aloud 'I slept well' or 'I slept badly.' Ask who is reporting on a time when nothing was seen.

A man wakes at four in the morning from a dream of his late father's voice. His heart is pounding and the room is dark. For a few seconds the dream is as real as the ceiling. Then the room returns: the fan, the street dog, the clock. He lies there and notices something plain. He was in the dream, saying 'I', and he is here now, saying 'I'. Before the dream there was a stretch he remembers only as 'I slept', with nothing in it to describe. The verse gives him a way to read this. The text teaches that waking, dream and deep sleep are three forms of one Self, and that the one who knows is not changed by what appears. He need not decide the dream was foolish or that waking is the only real place. He can see the three as one thread. Ordinary experience confirms that each morning we report on a night we did not watch. The verse does not take away the ache of the dream, and it does not replace sleep care from a doctor if nights keep breaking.
