Meaning · English

Vishva has his seat in the right eye. Taijasa is within, in the mind. Prajna dwells in the space of the heart. In this way the one self is established in the body in three places.

This is a verse about location. Gaudapada has just named three ways the self knows: waking, dream and deep sleep. Now he says where each is found in the body. Three words carry it. Akasha means space, the open room in which things can appear. Hridi means in the heart, the felt centre of a person. Vyavasthita means set in place, established. Vishva, the waking knower, is placed at the right eye, because waking is outward looking and the eye is where we face the world. The commentators take it as the place where waking experience is most plainly met. Taijasa, the dreamer, is placed in the mind, because dream is made of inner impressions with no outer object. Prajna, the knower in deep sleep, is placed in the heart-space, where nothing is divided and nothing is projected. The last clause says all three are settled in one body, in three ways. They are not three people. The earlier verse said the self is one, and this one shows it living in a single house. Gaudapada teaches it so the listener can find each state in their own body, and later see what stays the same through all three.

One person lives in a house. By day she sits at the front window and watches the street. In the evening she goes to the lamp-lit back room and goes over her day. At night she rests in the quiet inner courtyard, where nothing is happening. One person, three places in one house.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and close your eyes. Notice where your attention first rests: the eyes, the thoughts, or the chest. 2. Tomorrow, once in the morning, notice the eyes at work, looking outward, for one minute. 3. Once in the afternoon, notice the mind replaying something. Note only that it is replaying. 4. At day's end, rest a hand on your chest and notice any quiet there. Do not look for anything.

A woman waits at a bus stop at dusk after a long day. Her eyes ache from the glare of the road. Her mind keeps replaying an argument from lunch. Under both, her chest is tired and still. The verse gives her a way to sort this. The aching is in the eye, where the day meets her. The replaying is in the mind, where the day is turned over again. The stillness is in the heart-space, which the text names as the seat of the deepest state. She can see that these are three places and that she is not stuck in any one of them. The text teaches that one self is settled in all three. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: after a hard day the eyes tire and thoughts loop, while something under them stays quiet. The verse does not end the argument or ease the tiredness. It does not replace rest, or a doctor for aching eyes that do not clear. It only shows her where she is standing.
