Three Kinds of Satisfaction
Gaudapada Karika 1.3
Meaning · English
The one in waking, called vishva, always enjoys the gross. The one in dream, called taijasa, enjoys what is inward and set apart. The one in deep sleep, called prajna, enjoys bliss. So enjoyment is threefold; know it so. The gross satisfies vishva. The inward, set-apart satisfies taijasa. Bliss satisfies prajna. So too the satisfaction is threefold; know it so.
Three words carry this verse. Bhoga is enjoyment, from bhuj, to eat or to experience: taking something in and being fed by it. Sthula means gross, solid, what the senses can grip. Pravivikta means picked out and set apart, from vic, to separate: what is left when the outer world is shut away. Tripti is satisfaction, the settled feeling of having had enough. Gaudapada says each of the three states has its own food. Vishva, the one awake, takes in solid things: meals, sights, sounds, company. Taijasa, the one dreaming, takes in only what the mind itself has made, apart from the outer world. Prajna, the one in deep sleep, takes in bliss, with nothing before it to be known. The second half repeats the point for satisfaction: the gross fills vishva, the inward fills taijasa, and bliss fills prajna. Eating and being full are named separately, because they are two things. Why teach this here? The previous verses named one self in three forms. A listener will ask what makes the forms different. Gaudapada answers by what each one lives on. The reader is asked to see that a single enjoyer is fed three ways. Shankara, in his commentary, reads the repeated line as stressing that the fullness itself changes with the state.
A man spends the day on a market street eating from stalls. At night he lies in bed and replays the day in his head. Later he sleeps, with no market and no replay, and wakes rested. Same man, three kinds of nourishment: the food in hand, the memory of it, and the plain rest after.
1. Tonight, after dinner, sit for two minutes and notice the fullness in your body. That is the first kind: fed by something solid. 2. Before sleep, lie still and recall one scene from the day. Notice how it feeds you with nothing in front of you. 3. In the morning, before reaching for your phone, ask how rested you feel. Notice that this ease came with nothing taken in.
A taxi driver finishes a twelve-hour shift, eats a plate of rice and dal in the parked cab, and feels the day settle. Later he lies down and replays an argument with a passenger. Near dawn he sleeps deeply and wakes lighter than he lay down. The verse lets him see three separate sources of satisfaction in one day. The meal fed him through the body. The replay fed and troubled him through the mind alone, with nothing outside. The sleep gave rest with neither. The text teaches that these are three kinds of enjoyment, each with its own fullness, and that one enjoyer passes through them all. Ordinary experience agrees on a small point: a good meal, a vivid memory and a night of sound sleep each leave a different kind of contentment, and none can stand in for another. This is how the text itself describes the three states. The verse does not promise that the driver's argument stops replaying, or that sleep will come easily on a hard night. If sleep is poor for weeks, a doctor is the right person to ask.
