Enjoying Without Staining
Gaudapada Karika 1.5
Meaning · English
What is enjoyed in the three places, and the one who enjoys, as they have been declared: whoever knows both of these, though he enjoys, is not tainted.
Two words carry the verse. Bhojya is what is enjoyed, the object: the gross world awake, the inner images in dream, the bliss of deep sleep. Bhokta is the enjoyer, the one who takes it in. Dhaman, the 'place', is where each experience happens: waking, dream, deep sleep. Lipyate means to be smeared, as with paste or oil: to be stained by what one touches. Gaudapada says the person who knows both, the enjoyed and the enjoyer, as the earlier verses set them out, goes on eating, seeing and resting like anyone else, yet nothing sticks to him. The clauses run in order. First, the enjoyed and the enjoyer are named across all three places. Second, one who knows the pair, not only the object or only the self, stands differently to it. Third, enjoyment continues, and the stain does not. It is taught here because the earlier verses described three kinds of enjoying, and a listener may fear that this is a trap, that living means being soiled. Gaudapada answers that the soiling comes from not knowing what is happening. Shankara reads the knowing as seeing the enjoyer as the one self in every state. The verse asks the listener to look at who is enjoying, not to stop enjoying.
A lotus leaf sits in a rain-filled pond. Water beads on it, rolls about, and runs off, and the leaf stays dry. The leaf is the one who knows enjoyer and enjoyed: all the world's experience touches him, and none of it clings.
1. At your next meal, eat the first five bites slowly, and name silently what is enjoyed: taste, warmth, texture. 2. Then ask once, 'Who is tasting?' and stay with the question for a few breaths. 3. Tonight, as you fall asleep, notice that you are the same one who ate, worked and now rests. Do this for one week and note whether wanting more, or regretting what you had, loosens even slightly.
A man sits at his daughter's wedding feast, plate full, and cannot taste it. He is counting costs, watching the caterer, wondering who is offended. The food is good and he misses it. The verse, as the text teaches it, points to a different seat: the one who enjoys is separate from the dish and the worry alike, and seeing that clearly changes how the meal lands. Step by step: he notices the worry as something passing before him, he notices the taste as another thing passing, and he notices that he is the one aware of both. The meal is eaten whole, and the bill still gets paid later. Ordinary experience confirms that attention given to what is in front of us makes the enjoyment fuller and the leftover worry lighter. The verse does not promise that cost, grief or a hard day will vanish, and it does not replace help from a doctor or a counsellor when the mind is troubled beyond what a quiet look can settle.
