Meaning · English
Of all that exists, the origin, it is concluded, is life-force. Life-force brings forth everything. The Person sends out the rays of consciousness, each one apart.
Gaudapada begins a short list of what thinkers say about where the world comes from. This is the first answer: breath. Three words carry it. Prabhava is origin, from bhu, to come to be, with pra, forth. Prana is life-force, from an, to breathe, with pra, forth: the breath that goes out and the vitality it stands for. Cetoamshu is a ray of consciousness: chetas is awareness, amsha is a portion or beam. Purusha is the Person, the one who dwells in the body as in a city. The first line gives the claim: those who hold this view are certain that whatever exists has life-force as its source. The second line says prana brings forth everything. The third says the Person sends out his rays of awareness, and sends them apart, one into each being. Read together, the view holds that one living source puts out many separate points of awareness, as a lamp puts out beams. Gaudapada states the view without arguing against it. Shankara's commentary treats it as one of several accounts of creation, each looking at the same unborn Self and naming a different cause. Gaudapada is not giving the listener a task yet. He is laying out the explanations of origin so that the fourth state, which needs no origin, can be seen clearly.
A single lamp stands in a courtyard. Its light reaches every doorway as a separate patch on the floor, so each room seems to have its own light. The lamp is the Person, and each patch is one being's awareness, sent out from the same source and lying apart from the others.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and watch your breath without changing it. Notice that it goes on without your deciding. 2. Tomorrow, watch someone near you, a child or a colleague, for a few breaths. Notice the same movement in them. 3. Once during the day, ask yourself whether the awareness looking out of your eyes feels like a separate lamp or a patch of one light. Only notice. Do not settle it.
A man sits by a hospital cot at night, watching his newborn daughter's chest rise and fall. He has no skill to offer her. He can only watch the breath. The verse speaks to that hour. It holds that life-force is where every being begins, and that the one Person sends out a separate ray of awareness into each body. Step by step, it changes how he sees the cot. The small chest is a ray sent out apart, and the breath is the plainest sign that it has been sent. His own breath, going in the same rhythm, belongs to the same source. Ordinary experience agrees that breath is the first thing we watch for in someone we love. Today's vocabulary has no single word for what prana names. It splits the matter into breathing, pulse and the body's steady work of staying alive. In the tradition's own teaching, prana covers all of these and more. The verse does not say whether the child is well, and it does not replace the nurse or the doctor at the bedside.
