Meaning · English
Others who think about creation take it to be the Lord's glory, the spreading out of his greatness. Others say creation has the nature of dream and magic, something imagined. Those certain about creation say it is only the Lord's wish. And those who think about time say that all beings are born from time.
Gaudapada keeps listing what thinkers say about where the world comes from. Four more answers appear here. Take the key words first. Vibhuti is glory or abundance, from the root bhu, to be, with vi, widely: the world as the Lord's greatness overflowing. Maya is magic, the making of an appearance, as a conjurer makes one. Iccha is wish: the world arises because he wants it, with no tool or effort. Kala is time, the turning that brings things to birth and takes them away. Now the clauses. Some see creation as the Lord's display of his own wealth. Some say it is like dream and conjuring, a thing that appears but has no stuff of its own; this resembles what Vasubandhu and others of his day said about dreams. Some say it is simply his wish. Some say time brings beings forth. Why teach this at all? Gaudapada is showing how many answers people give, each sure of itself. The commentators take them as views held by thinkers of creation. They set the ground for his own point, that the fourth, turiya, stands beyond every account of how the world began. The listener is asked to notice that all these answers stay on the side of the world and never reach the one who asks.
Four neighbours look at one lit window at night. One says the owner is generous, one says it is a trick of the glass, one says he simply wished it, one says the hour made it happen. Each names a cause from outside. Nobody goes in. The theories of creation are those four voices.
1. Tonight, choose one ordinary thing, a cup of tea or a lamp, and ask where it truly came from. 2. Answer four ways, one after another: it is glory, it is a dream, it is a wish, it is time. Give each a minute. 3. Notice how each answer lets another question rise behind it. 4. Then sit quietly for two minutes and look at who is asking.
A grandmother is peeling peas at the kitchen table when her six-year-old grandson asks who made everything. She says God made it. He asks why. She says because God wished it. He asks what was before that. She laughs and has no next answer. The four accounts here show her another way to speak. She can tell him that some people say the world is the Lord's glory, some say it is like a dream, some say it is a wish, and some say time brings things forth. She need not pretend that one of them ends the question. She can let him hold them side by side, and she can see that each answer only invites the next why. This does not settle the boy's question, and it does not quiet the wonder that made him ask. It also gives no ground for choosing a winner among the four. It only shows that the question keeps moving, and that the one asking is always still present.
