Some say creation is for enjoyment, others say it is for play. But this is simply the nature of the Lord, for what craving can there be in one whose wishes are all fulfilled? He is the ruler, the sovereign, the undying, at the ending of every sorrow. He is the one without a second among all things that exist, the shining one, all-pervading, who is remembered as the fourth.
Two old answers to why a world exists are set side by side. Some say bhoga, enjoyment, from bhuj, to taste or eat. Others say krida, play, the way a child plays with no purpose beyond playing. Gaudapada then asks the question both answers raise: what does a creator lack? The Lord is aptakama, a word made of apta, gained, and kama, desire. His wishes are already met. Wanting nothing, he cannot be creating to fill a gap. So Gaudapada calls creation his svabhava, his own nature, the way a thing simply is what it is. Shankara's reading, as the commentators generally take it, is that this answers the charge that a creator must be needy. The second half names who this Lord is. He rules, he does not perish, and he stands at the ending of all sorrows. He is advaita, without a second, so nothing stands outside him to be wanted. He is deva, the shining one, and vibhu, all-pervading. And he is turiya, the fourth, the one behind waking, dream and deep sleep. The teaching is placed here to quiet a question that could trap the mind: why would the complete one make anything? Gaudapada answers by dissolving the premise. It asks the listener to notice that fullness does not act out of hunger.
A spring on a hillside runs all day without being thirsty. Nobody pours it out and it gains nothing by running. Water simply flows because that is what a full spring does. Creation, in this teaching, flows from the Lord the same way, out of fullness and not out of need.
1. Choose one small task today that you would normally do for thanks or credit, such as washing dishes, making tea, or tidying a shared room. 2. Do it slowly, for as long as it takes, and tell no one. 3. While you work, notice any pull toward being noticed or paid back in some way. 4. Afterward, spend one minute noticing how the task felt when nothing was expected from it.
A grandmother is up before dawn, kneading dough for a neighbourhood festival. Her back aches. Nobody has asked her to do it and nobody will keep count of the loaves. She hums while she works. Watch what the teaching changes in that moment. First, she can ask whether she is working from lack or from fullness: is she trying to earn a place, or giving from what she already has? Second, the answer changes the work's weight. Effort done to fill an emptiness tends to feel heavy and keeps checking for applause. Effort given freely feels lighter, and ordinary experience bears this out. Third, the same effort is still real effort, and her hands still tire. The text speaks of the Lord's nature, not of hers, and it offers her a way of seeing action, not a claim that she is already complete. It does not ease her aching back, replace rest when she needs it, or take the place of a doctor if the pain is more than tiredness. It does not remove the wish to be thanked, either. It only shows what work looks like without that wish at its centre.
