Meaning · English

Waking and dreaming selves are tied by both cause and effect. The self of deep sleep is tied by cause alone. Neither kind of tie holds in the fourth. In the fourth there is no knowing of oneself, nor of others, nor of what is true, nor of what is false. The sleeper in deep sleep knows nothing at all. The fourth is the one that sees all, always.

Three words carry this. Karya is effect, what is made or done. Karana is cause, the seed it grows from. Turiya is simply the fourth, the one standing beside waking, dream and deep sleep. Gaudapada says the waking self (vishva) and the dreaming self (taijasa) are tied to both cause and effect: they are caught in a world of things that make other things happen. The self of deep sleep (prajna) is tied to cause alone. Nothing shows itself there, yet the seed is still present, which is why a person wakes up the same person. Neither tie holds in the fourth. Then the verse turns to knowing. The sleeper does not know himself or another, truth or falsehood, because no knowing is going on. The fourth is different. It is not blank like sleep. It is always the seer of everything. This is taught to separate the fourth from deep sleep, which is easy to confuse with it. Both are quiet, but only one is dark. Shankara reads the last line as saying that this awareness never leaves and never depends on anything it sees. The listener is asked to stop taking silence for emptiness, and to stop taking the fourth for one more state that comes and goes.

A lamp stands in a room. When furniture fills the room, the lamp lights it. When the room is emptied and shut, the lamp still burns, and nothing is lit. The lamp is the fourth. The furniture is waking and dream, the dark shut room is deep sleep, and the lamp is the same throughout.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the last thing you remember before sleep comes. 2. Tomorrow morning, before you move, notice the first thing that returns: a sound, a thought, a sense of the room. 3. Ask once: what was aware of both of these? Wait a few breaths without answering. Do this for three mornings.

A night-shift nurse sits in her car at dawn, too tired to start the engine. She feels she is hardly there, as if nobody is home. The verse would have her look closely at that. The exhausted mind does go dull, and sleep deprivation does thin out memory and judgment. The verse does not argue with that. It speaks of something else: the plain fact of being aware, which she has not lost even while her thinking has slowed. Step by step, she can notice that she knows she is tired, and that this knowing is steady while her thoughts are not. Ordinary experience also agrees that we wake from deep sleep as the same person, though we recall nothing of it. The verse then says the fourth is not that dark. The limit is plain. This does not make her rested, and it does not replace sleep, food or a doctor if the exhaustion is more than a hard week. It offers only a different way to see what remains.
