Deep Sleep and the Fourth

Gaudapada Karika 1.13

Meaning · English

Not seeing two things is the same for both, the sleeper in deep sleep and the Fourth. The deep sleeper is joined to a seed-sleep, and that sleep is not found in the Fourth. The first two are joined to sleep with dreams. The deep sleeper is joined to sleep without dreams. Those who are certain see neither sleep nor dream in the Fourth.

Gaudapada is comparing two states that look alike from outside. Three words carry it. Prajna is the self in deep sleep, the one "fully knowing" only in the sense that everything is gathered into a single mass of unawareness. Turiya is simply "the fourth", the self beyond waking, dream and deep sleep. Bija-nidra is "seed-sleep": bija is seed, nidra is sleep. Gaudapada says that in deep sleep and in the Fourth, no duality is seen. No world, no other person, no this and that. On that point they are equal. But the deep sleeper still carries the seed, and from it waking and dream sprout again. Shankara reads this seed-sleep as not knowing the truth of oneself. The Fourth has no such seed. Then the verse sorts the states. Waking and dream are joined to sleep that has dreams in it, meaning a mind busy with false appearances. Deep sleep is sleep without dreams. The Fourth is neither: the ones who are certain see no sleep and no dream there. Gaudapada teaches this so the reader will not mistake deep sleep for the goal. Quiet is not enough. What matters is whether the seed is still there. It asks the listener to tell absence of seeing from absence of ignorance.

A seed packet lies shut in a drawer. Nothing is growing and nothing shows, yet the next planting is already inside it. That is deep sleep: no duality seen, seed kept. The Fourth is a field where no such packet exists to be opened.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the last thing you remember before sleep takes you. Expect to miss it. 2. In the morning, before reaching for your phone, stay still for ten seconds. Notice the first moment the day's worries and names come back. 3. Ask once, quietly: where were they a minute ago? Do not hunt for an answer. Just leave the question open and get up.

A grandmother wakes from an afternoon nap on the sofa. For a few seconds she does not know the hour, the room, or her own worries. Then it all returns, her knee, the unpaid bill, the grandchildren due at four. Ordinary experience confirms the plain part of this: after dreamless sleep people say they knew nothing, yet they feel rested, and the same troubles are waiting when they wake. Gaudapada teaches that this is exactly why deep sleep is not freedom. The absence of seeing is not the end of the seed. What the verse would change for her is small. She could notice that the quiet she liked was real but borrowed, and that it ended on its own schedule. The text points to a seeing in which nothing needs to end. Sleep itself is a matter for the body. It does not cure tiredness of the heart, and anyone who cannot sleep, or sleeps too much, should see a doctor. The verse makes no claim about sleep health.
