For one who grasps it wrongly, there is dream. For one who does not know the truth, there is sleep. When these two mistakes, the wrong grasp and the not knowing, are worn away, the fourth state is reached. When the self, asleep through a beginningless illusion, wakes up, it knows the unborn, the sleepless, the dreamless, the one without a second.
Gaudapada gives two names to two kinds of mistake. Anyatha grahana is taking a thing otherwise than it is: grasping wrongly. That, he says, is dream. Tattvam ajanatah is not knowing the truth at all, from tattva, 'that-ness', what a thing really is. That is sleep, the blank kind. Together they are viparyasa, the reversal or upside-down view, and when both wear away (kshina, worn thin and gone) the fourth, turiya, is reached. Turiya just means 'the fourth'. Then he says who is waking. The jiva, the individual self, has been asleep through anadi maya, an illusion with no beginning we could point to. Maya here means the power by which one thing appears as many; it is not a claim that nothing exists. When the jiva wakes, it knows what is aja, unborn, anidra, without sleep, asvapna, without dream, and advaita, without a second. Why teach this here? The surrounding verses show turiya as free of dream and sleep. This verse tells how the ordinary person gets there: by ending two errors, not by travelling anywhere. Shankara reads the waking as knowledge removing ignorance, the way light removes darkness. The text asks the listener to see that wrong grasping and not knowing are the two things to be undone.
A man wakes in a dark room and sees a snake on the floor. Then he switches on the light and finds a coiled rope. Nothing was added or taken away except the mistake. The rope stands for the unborn, one without a second; the snake is wrong grasping, and the dark is not knowing.
1. Tonight, in the first minute after waking, before you reach for your phone, stay still and notice that you are awake. 2. During the day, when you feel sure of a judgment about someone, pause for one breath and ask: am I seeing this as it is, or grasping it otherwise? 3. Once this week, write down one belief you held firmly that turned out to be wrong, and how it ended.
A man lies awake at three in the morning, certain his business is finished because one client has not replied. The thought feels like fact. By dawn, with some light and a cup of tea, the same thought looks smaller, and the client answers by noon. Nothing outside changed overnight; the grasp changed. The verse speaks to that moment. It names two errors: seeing wrongly, and not seeing at all. In the small hours he did both, taking a guess for a certainty and not knowing he was guessing. The step the text asks for is to catch the grasping itself, to notice 'I am taking this as true', before asking whether it is. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and fear make doubtful thoughts feel solid, and that morning often loosens them. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the client replies, or that worries prove baseless. It speaks of waking from a deeper sleep, which the text teaches, and it is no replacement for rest, for a doctor when low mood or sleeplessness persists, or for practical steps.
