The wise declare that everything seen in dream is unreal. The things seen stand within the dreamer, and they are enclosed in a narrow space. Time, too, is too short for the dreamer to travel to a place and see it. And the one who has woken is no longer in the place where the dream put him.

Gaudapada begins by saying that the wise call dream objects vaitathya. The word means not being as they appear, from vitatha, untrue to its look. It does not mean nothing was seen. Something was seen, but it was not what it seemed. He gives three reasons. First, antahsthana, standing within. Dream things lie inside the dreamer, not out in a world. Second, samvrtatva, being enclosed or covered over. Mountains and roads appear, yet the sleeper lies in a small space. Shankara reads this as the point that vast places cannot truly fit inside a narrow body. Third, the shortness of time. Sleep is brief, so no one could actually travel to a distant land and see it. The last clause is the plainest. The one who wakes, pratibuddha, finds he is not in the dream place. He never left his bed. Why teach this here? The second chapter asks whether the world we see is as solid as it looks. Gaudapada starts with the case no one argues about. Everyone agrees dreams are unreal in this sense, so he builds from there. The dream comparison also appears in Buddhist thought of his time, in Vasubandhu for example, and Gaudapada uses it for his own purpose. The verse asks the listener to admit one thing honestly: what felt fully real in dream was only an appearance, seen from inside, in no place at all.

A child plays a game of kings and armies on a tablet. The castles are large, the marches long, and the whole kingdom fits in a rectangle a hand wide. When the screen goes dark, no one has gone anywhere. The kingdom was seen, never travelled. Dream places map to this: vast in appearance, held inside one small seeing.

1. Tonight, when you wake from a dream, or tomorrow morning if you remember one, lie still for a minute before moving. 2. Recall one place in it: a street, a room, a face. Ask where that place was while you slept. Notice that your body lay in one bed the whole time. 3. Notice, without pushing, how real it felt while it lasted. 4. Leave it there. Do not draw conclusions about waking life today.

A man wakes at three in the morning with his heart pounding. In the dream he was late for his daughter's wedding, running through a station that kept growing longer. He sits up, sees the dark wardrobe and hears the fan, and within a few breaths the station is gone. The verse speaks to exactly this moment. Gaudapada's first reason is that dream things stand inside the dreamer. The station was never out there. His second reason is that it was enclosed: the long platform lay inside one small bed. His third is that he never went anywhere. The man can see this at once, step by step: the room is the same, his body never moved, the dread was real but the station was not. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightening dream loosens its hold within moments of waking. The verse does not promise that the worry behind the dream will leave. If the wedding is real and the fear of failing is real, they remain. It also does not replace a doctor for someone whose nights are regularly broken by terror or poor sleep.
