That chariots and the like do not exist in dream is heard, and it is reasoned out. By that very reasoning, the sages say, the falseness of dream things is shown. Because the many things are seen only within, the same is held of the waking state. As it is there, so it is in dream: the things are marked off only by being enclosed.

Gaudapada returns to the dream chariot. Three words carry the verse. Abhava is absence, from a (not) and bhava (being): the chariot, the horses and the road are simply not there. Vaitathya is falseness, from vitatha, 'not so as it appears': things that show up as solid and are not what they seem. Samvrtatva is enclosure or covering, from sam (together) and vr (to cover, shut in). The first half says that the dream chariot has no existence outside, and that this is known by reasoning, not by faith. A dreamer's chariot needs a road, and the dreamer's room has no road. The second half carries the point across. Waking things are also seen only within, in the mind's field of seeing, and so the same falseness is held of them. Each state shows its objects shut inside its own boundary. Shankara reads the argument as a parity: what holds in dream is applied to waking by the same reason. Gaudapada teaches this because a student asks, quietly, why waking should count as more real. His answer is that the two states share a feature. He asks the listener to look at that feature honestly. The falseness he means is narrow: things are real as experience, not as things standing alone.

A child draws a house on a steamed window, with a door and a path. It looks complete while the glass stays misted. The house has no ground and no street behind it. Dream chariots and waking objects alike appear only on the surface of awareness, and are not independent things.

1. Tonight, just before sleep, recall one dream from the past week, however small. 2. Ask where its objects were, outside you or only in the seeing. 3. Tomorrow morning, spend two minutes looking at one ordinary object, a cup or a door. 4. Notice that you know it only as seen, touched or remembered. Do not argue it out. Just notice.

A man wakes at three in the morning after dreaming his car was rolling down a hill with his daughter inside. His heart is pounding and his hands are damp. For a few seconds the fear is entirely real, and the car is nowhere. Then he sits up, sees the dark room, and the hill dissolves. The verse speaks to that gap. The body reacted fully to something that had no road under it, and Gaudapada's teaching is that every experienced thing is likewise known only inside the seeing. In that moment the verse lets him name what happened: the fear was real, the car was not, and the seeing held both. Ordinary experience confirms that dreams feel solid while they last and that the body responds to them. Sleep medicine explains vivid dreams as the brain active in sleep, and that fits the dream half of the claim. Nothing in current knowledge supports or refutes the claim that waking objects are the same kind of thing as dream objects, and the text offers that as its own teaching. The verse does not calm a racing heart or replace a doctor if nightmares are frequent or frightening.
