Grace for the Unbound

Bhagavad Gita 2.64

Meaning · English

But the one who governs the mind, moving among the objects of the senses with senses free of both attachment and aversion, attains the Grace of God.

Krishna uses two paired words. Raga is attachment, the pull toward what pleases. Dvesha is aversion, the push away from what hurts. Prasada, the word for grace, carries the sense of clearness and calm, like water that has settled. The verse does not ask Arjuna to stop seeing, hearing, tasting or touching. The senses keep working among their objects. What changes is the grip: the mind is governed, so neither craving nor dislike gives the orders. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just traced how dwelling on an object leads to attachment, desire, anger and ruin. Here he gives the other road. A person who meets the world without being dragged by it does not start that chain, and what arrives instead is grace. Shankara reads prasada as a clear, settled mind. Ramanuja reads it as a calm mind fit for contemplating the self. Madhva reads it as the favour of the Lord. The listener is asked to live among ordinary things, food, people, news, work, and to be the one who decides, not the one who is pulled.

Someone carries a full glass of water across a crowded hall. They pass tables of food and people they dislike, and they neither grab at things nor shove anyone aside. Not a drop spills. The walking is the senses at work among objects, and the steady hand is the governed mind.

1. At your next meal, eat the first half slowly and notice the pull toward more. Then decide, calmly, whether to take more. 2. Once today, when someone irritates you, notice the small push to turn away or answer sharply. Take one breath, then respond politely. 3. Tonight, name one pull and one push you felt today. Write them in a single line each, nothing more.

A grandmother sits at the festival table. The sweets are in front of her, and across from her sits a relative whose remarks have stung for years. She feels two things at once: a reach toward the third sweet and a stiffening toward him. The verse would change the moment in small steps. First she notices both, the pull and the push, as events in her own body. Then she eats what she decides to eat, not what her hand has already chosen, and answers him in an even voice. Neither urge is fought. Neither is obeyed. Afterward she feels settled, and Krishna calls that settledness the grace that comes to such a person. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and hunger weaken this kind of restraint, so the same table is harder at the end of a long day. The verse does not promise that the relative will change, that old hurt will vanish, or that a person with a diet advised by a doctor can ignore it. It speaks of how one meets things, not of what they do.
