Sorrow Ends, Mind Settles

Bhagavad Gita 2.65

Meaning · English

When grace is received, all his sorrows come to an end. For the one whose mind has become tranquil, the intellect soon becomes firmly established.

Three words carry the teaching. Prasada is grace, and it also means clearness, like water after the mud has sunk. Prasanna-chetas is a mind that has become tranquil, a mind that has stopped churning. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that judges and decides. Krishna tells Arjuna that when this grace arrives, sorrows are destroyed, and the word he uses for destruction is complete: all of them, not some. For the one whose mind is tranquil, the intellect soon stands firm. It no longer sways with every wind of wanting and fearing. The reason comes from the verses before it. A mind dragged around by attraction and aversion loses its footing, and the judgement goes with it. A mind that is quiet gets that footing back. So sorrow and unsteady thinking are tied together, and so are peace and steady thinking. What Krishna asks of Arjuna is to treat a quiet mind as the ground that wise action stands on, not as a reward to enjoy at the end. The commentators read the grace differently. Shankara takes it as the clearness that comes from mastering the mind. Ramanuja takes it as the favour of God, which brings the mind's calm. Madhva also stresses the Lord's favour as the source of that calm.

A glass of river water carried home is brown and cloudy. Left alone on the table for an hour, the silt sinks and you can see the bottom. Nothing was added. The mind works the same way: once the stirring stops, clarity shows itself and judgement stands steady.

1. Pick one ten-minute stretch today, after a meal or before sleep, and sit or walk with no phone or screen. 2. When a worry or a grudge starts stirring, do not argue with it. Just name it silently, as a worry or a grudge, and let it pass. 3. Afterwards, before you decide anything small, such as a reply to a message, wait one full breath. 4. Notice whether your thinking feels clearer after the quiet than before it.

A shopkeeper opens the shutter on the morning the rent is due. The till holds less than the bill. His chest is tight, he has slept badly, and he is already rehearsing a quarrel with the landlord. In that state every option looks bad, and he snaps at the first customer. Krishna's teaching changes the order of things. First the mind is allowed to settle, even a little: he sits for a few minutes, breathes slowly, and lets the rehearsed quarrel run out. Then the thinking comes back. He sees that he can ask the landlord for a week, count what is owed to him, and sort the problems into what can be done today and what cannot. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and alarm narrow thinking, and that calm widens it. The teaching does not promise that the rent gets paid, that worry disappears for good, or that a calm mind replaces a doctor or an accountant where one is needed. It says that steadiness of thought follows a quiet mind, and that sorrow loosens its hold as that quiet grows.
