The Humbling of Indra

The story · English
After Krishna had held up the Govardhana hill and protected the people of Vraja from the downpour, the cow Surabhi came from the celestial realm of Goloka, and the king of the gods, Indra, came too. Indra approached Krishna in a secluded place, though he was deeply ashamed and felt the weight of his own pride. In a gesture of total surrender, he bowed low and touched Krishna's feet with his sun-bright crown. Having witnessed the infinite power of the young boy, Indra's pride as lord of the three worlds was completely gone. He folded his hands in prayer, finally seeing the truth of the one who stood before him.
Indra spoke with deep devotion, describing Krishna's abode as a place of pure goodness, peace, and penance, far removed from the delusions of the material world. He said that greed and the other faults of the ignorant had no place in Krishna at all. He acknowledged that Krishna is the father and teacher of the universe, a sovereign who still takes up the rod to protect righteousness and restrain the wicked. Indra admitted that he had been foolish and blinded by his own status, and he begged for forgiveness, praying that his mind would never again be so clouded by pride.
Knowing that Krishna had descended to Earth to relieve it of its heavy burden by destroying the kings and generals who weighed it down, Indra offered his deepest salutations. He praised Krishna as the Great Soul, the son of Vasudeva, and the lord of the Yadavas. With a heavy heart, Indra confessed his crime: he had tried to destroy the cowherd settlement of Vraja with violent storms because his own sacrifices had been interrupted. He admitted that his efforts were useless and that his pride had been shattered. He surrendered himself completely to Krishna, seeking refuge in his teacher and lord.
Krishna smiled and replied in a voice as deep as a thundercloud. He told Indra that he had stopped the cowherds' sacrifice to Indra specifically to help him; by humbling Indra, he had granted him the gift of constant remembrance. Krishna explained that those blinded by wealth and power cannot see the hand of divine justice, and when he wishes to favour such a person, he makes them fall from their riches. He then commanded Indra and his companions to return to their own duties and to govern their realms without the pride that had led to this conflict.
Then the cow Surabhi approached and praised Krishna as the Soul of the Universe and as their own Indra. On Brahma's instruction, she and the other cows resolved to install him as their Indra. Surabhi bathed him with her own milk; then Indra, with the divine sages and urged by the mothers of the gods, poured over him the celestial Ganga water raised by Airavata's trunk and named him Govinda. Tumburu, Narada, Gandharvas and others came and sang Hari's glory, while celestial nymphs danced with joy. The world transformed: trees dripped with honey, mountains sparkled with gems, and even fierce animals became peaceful. Having crowned Govinda, Indra returned to the heavens with the other gods.
