The Wonders of Krishna

The story · English

The cowherds of Vraja gathered around one another, their faces filled with wonder. They had seen Krishna do things that no ordinary child could ever do, and they could not keep their confusion to themselves. They turned to Nanda and spoke plainly. 'These deeds of this boy are truly extraordinary,' they said. 'How is it possible that someone like him was born in a simple village like ours? He is only seven years old, yet he lifted the great Govardhana hill with a single hand, as easily as an elephant carries a lotus flower. We cannot understand how a child can possess such power.'

The men continued to list the miracles they had witnessed. They spoke of how Krishna had drained the life from the powerful demoness Putana by drinking her milk. They remembered the time he lay as an infant beneath a cart, crying and kicking his feet upward, and overturned the cart with the tip of his foot. They recalled how, when he was one year old, the demon Trinavarta carried him into the sky, and Krishna gripped the demon's throat and killed him. They even spoke of the time his mother tied him to a mortar for stealing butter, and he crawled between the two arjuna trees and pulled them down with his arms.

The cowherds remembered how Krishna had faced the crane-demon Baka, who wanted to kill him, tearing the bird's beak apart with his hands. They spoke of how a demon disguised as a calf had slipped in among the calves to kill him, and how Krishna killed it and knocked down the kapittha fruits with its body. With Balarama, he had killed the donkey-demon Dhenuka and his kin and made the palm grove safe. He had Balarama strike down the fierce Pralamba, and he saved the cowherds and the cattle from the forest fire. Finally, they spoke of how he had subdued the proud serpent Kaliya and cleared the waters of the Yamuna. 'We all love him deeply, Nanda,' they said, 'and his love for us is natural too. How can that be? We must know: who is this boy?'

Nanda looked at the cowherds and told them to set aside their doubts. He shared the words that the sage Garga had once told him. 'Garga told me that this boy once had three different colors—white, red, and yellow—before he became the dark color he is now. He said this son of mine was once born somewhere to Vasudeva, which is why the learned call him Vāsudeva. He has many names and forms that match his divine qualities, though most people do not know them. He has come to bring you all great benefit; through him, you will cross over all the difficulties of life.'

Nanda explained that Krishna is like Narayana himself, possessing the same power, fame, and glory, which is why his deeds are not cause for surprise. Enemies, he said, cannot overpower those who love this great soul, just as asuras cannot overcome those on Vishnu's side. Nanda added that after Garga went home, he had come to regard Krishna as a portion of Narayana. Upon hearing these words and remembering the immense light of Krishna, the people of Vraja were filled with joy. They bowed to Nanda and then to Krishna, their confusion gone. Suka closed with a prayer: when Indra, angry that his sacrifice was stopped, sent rain, hail and wind, Krishna lifted the hill with one hand as easily as a child lifts a mushroom and sheltered the herders, cattle and women. May that lord of the cows be pleased with us.
