Praise for the Seven Rivers

Rig Veda 10.75.1

Meaning · English

Waters, the singer will proclaim your highest greatness in Vivasvat's house. Seven by seven, three ways, they have flowed forth; the Sindhu outruns all streams by its strength.

The singer is a praise-maker by craft, and he promises to tell the greatness of the waters well. Vivasvat's house is the place of worship. Sāyaṇa reads Vivasvat as the householder who tends the fire, while others take him as the father of the first sacrificer. The rivers come in sevens, a count the Vedic poets used for the great streams of their land. Sāyaṇa reads the three ways as earth, the middle air and the sky. Sindhu is the Indus, named as the strongest of them all.

Picture a school choir on a stage, rows of children singing the same song together. Every voice is part of the sound. Yet one voice carries past the rest and reaches the back of the hall. The rows are the many rivers, all honoured together, and that one carrying voice is the Sindhu, praised for its strength.
