Meaning · English
Varuna dug your paths to travel, Sindhu, when you ran toward the prizes. Over the earth you go by high slopes, when you rule at the head of all that moves.
Sindhu is the Indus. Varuna, the god who keeps the waters in their order, dug its paths before it ever flowed. Sāyaṇa adds that he cut them wider than any other river's. The river then ran toward its prizes, which Sāyaṇa reads as food: the harvests its water raises. It travels over high ground, breaking through mountains. It rules at the head of all that moves. For Sāyaṇa that means living creatures. Later readers take it as the other streams.
Before a school sports day, a groundskeeper rolls the track flat and paints the lanes. Hours later a runner bursts down her lane, and the rest of the field strings out behind her. The lanes were there first. The speed is hers. Varuna laid the course, Sindhu runs it, and the lesser streams follow her lead.
