A Roar Rising Skyward

Meaning · English
Her sound climbs from earth to sky; with flashing light she lifts an endless surge. Like rain thundering from cloud, the Sindhu comes roaring like a bull.
The Sindhu is the Indus, the great river of the north-west. The seer hears it before anything else. Its noise runs along the ground and seems to fill the sky. Then he sees it. The 'endless surge' is its rushing force, which Sāyaṇa reads as speed, lifted up with a flash. He takes that light as the glitter on its waves. Two comparisons follow: storm rain thundering out of a cloud, and a bull roaring. Both describe a power that announces itself by sound.
At night beside a railway line, a freight train is heard long before it appears. A rumble comes up through the ground. Then its headlamp flares, and its weight shakes everything as it passes. The rumble is the roar reaching the sky. The headlamp is the flash on the waves. The shaking is the surge.
