A Warrior King Out Front

Rig Veda 10.75.4

Meaning · English

Sindhu, the rivers hurry lowing to you like mothers to a child, like cows full of milk. A warrior king, you lead both flanks at the front of these rushing streams.

Sindhu is the Indus, the great river of the north-west, spoken to as a person. The other rivers come to it calling out, the way mothers cry as they hurry to their young, or cows heavy with milk low on the way to their calves. The second half turns from tenderness to command. Sindhu is a king at war who takes the front while the streams fall in on either side. The two flanks are an army's wings; Sāyaṇa takes them as the two banks the flood fills.

Picture a drum major stepping out at the head of a street parade. Columns from side roads fall in behind, filling the street from kerb to kerb and moving to one beat. Sindhu is that figure at the front. The joining rivers are the columns, and the full street is the swollen channel they share.
