Meaning · English
Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Shutudri, with Parushni, take up this hymn of mine. Marudvridha with Asikni, Arjikiya with Vitasta and Sushoma, listen.
The poet calls each river by name and asks two things: that they take up his hymn and stay with it, and that they listen. The list begins with Ganga and Yamuna in the east and moves west to the streams of the Punjab. Shutudri is the Sutlej, Parushni the Ravi, Asikni the Chenab and Vitasta the Jhelum. Sāyaṇa counts seven chief rivers here, with three more joined to them as their tributaries. Later readers are less sure which streams Marudvridha and Arjikiya were.
A teacher taking attendance reads each name aloud, and each student answers in turn. No one is left as just part of 'the class'. Naming the streams one by one does the same work. Each river is spoken to directly and asked to hear, instead of being praised as one mass of water.
